Welsh Labour Letting Welsh Pupils Down

A report published by Onward has highlighted the impact of Welsh Labour’s education policies on the standard of learning in Wales. This concerning analysis suggests that, without changes to the education system, Wales will continue to see worsening PISA scores, with Welsh pupils falling further behind their counterparts in other parts of the UK and Europe.

Since 2006, Wales has consistently fallen behind England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland in PISA scores for science, mathematics, and reading. This is especially concerning when considered alongside the fact that the cueing method is still being used in 77% of Welsh schools that responded to an FOI request by ITV, despite this method having been abolished in England.

Commenting on the findings of the report, Janet said:

“The findings and projections contained within the Onward report are deeply concerning and highlight the serious failings of the Welsh Government when it comes to education in Wales.

“These failings, along with the continued use of outdated systems, are leading to a 'lost generation'. It is vital that urgent action is taken now to address these issues and to ensure that the children of Wales have the best start to their academic life, one they can continue to build upon in the future.

“Wales has a serious skills deficit, and it is important that the foundations and basics are put in place first.”
