Further to the decision by the Welsh Government to approve the controversial Alaw Môn solar farm on Ynys Môn which will see panels installed across 660 acres of land near Llyn Alaw, Janet Finch-Saunders MS/AS, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Biodiversity, has highlighted that Plaid Cymru and Liberal Democrats missed the opportunity in June 2025 to block the decision on this application and all others in Wales / Ymhellach i benderfyniad Llywodraeth Cymru i gymeradwyo fferm solar ddadleuol Alaw Môn ar Ynys Môn a fydd yn gweld paneli'n cael eu gosod ar draws 660 erw o dir ger Llyn Alaw, mae Janet Finch-Saunders MS/AS, Ysgrifennydd yr Wrthblaid dros Newid Hinsawdd a Bioamrywiaeth, wedi tynnu sylw at y ffaith bod Plaid Cymru a'r Democrat Rhyddfrydol wedi colli'r cyfle ym mis Mehefin 2025 i rwystro'r penderfyniad ar y cais hwn a phob cais arall yng Nghymru.

On 11 June 2025 Mrs Finch-Saunders presented a motion to the Welsh Parliament which proposed that the Senedd / Ar 11 Mehefin 2025 cyflwynodd Mrs Finch-Saunders gynnig i Senedd Cymru a oedd yn cynnig bod y Senedd:

1. Calls on the Welsh Government to:

a) announce a moratorium on all applications to place solar panels on agricultural land;

b) undertake a review of the potential of solar energy in Wales; and

c) develop a solar strategy for Wales.

1. Yn galw ar Lywodraeth Cymru i:

a) cyhoeddi moratoriwm ar bob cais i osod paneli solar ar dir amaethyddol;

b) cynnal adolygiad o botensial ynni solar yng Nghymru; ac

c) datblygu strategaeth solar ar gyfer Cymru

13 Members voted in favour: 11 Welsh Conservative and 2 independents / Pleidleisiodd 13 Aelod o blaid: 11 Ceidwadwr Cymreig a 2 annibynnol

23 Members voted against: 23 Welsh Labour / Pleidleisiodd 23 o Aelodau yn erbyn: 23 o Lafur Cymru

10 Members abstained: 10 Plaid Cymru / Ymataliodd 10 Aelod: 10 Plaid Cymru

The single Liberal Democrat didn’t vote at all / Ni phleidleisiodd yr un Democrat Rhyddfrydol o gwbl

Commenting on the Alaw Môn solar farm and the failure of the Welsh Government and Welsh Parliament to ensure that decisions are made based on a sound solar strategy for Wales, Janet said:

“While securing our energy future is important, it must not come at the expense of our agricultural land. Undermining farming in this way threatens food security and rural livelihoods.

“We need a clear and sustainable solar strategy that balances renewable energy development with the protection of our farmland. The current lack of strategy risks undermining both our energy goals and our food security.

“From Switzerland to Japan, measures are being taken in nations globally to see solar panels placed in innovative locations which do not hamper food production. Rather than take the opportunity I created to pause all decisions on solar farms, Plaid Cymru through abstaining and the Liberal Democrat by not voting at all, enabled the Welsh Labour Government to keep charging ahead without a solar strategy.

“Should Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrat have joined forces with the Welsh Conservative and independent members on 11 June 2025, the decision on Alaw Môn solar farm could have been blocked whilst a solar strategy is created for Wales”.

Wrth wneud sylwadau ar fferm solar Alaw Môn a methiant Llywodraeth Cymru a Senedd Cymru i sicrhau bod penderfyniadau’n cael eu gwneud yn seiliedig ar strategaeth solar gadarn i Gymru, dywedodd Janet:

“Er bod sicrhau dyfodol ein ynni yn bwysig, ni ddylai ddod ar draul ein tir amaethyddol. Mae tanseilio ffermio yn y modd hwn yn bygwth diogelwch bwyd a bywoliaeth gwledig.

“Mae angen strategaeth solar glir a chynaliadwy arnom sy’n cydbwyso datblygu ynni adnewyddadwy â diogelu ein tir fferm. Mae’r diffyg strategaeth presennol yn peryglu tanseilio ein hamcanion ynni a’n diogelwch bwyd.

“O'r Swistir i Japan, mae mesurau'n cael eu cymryd mewn gwledydd ledled y byd i weld paneli solar yn cael eu gosod mewn lleoliadau arloesol nad ydynt yn rhwystro cynhyrchu bwyd. Yn hytrach na manteisio ar y cyfle a greais i ohirio pob penderfyniad ar ffermydd solar, fe wnaeth Plaid Cymru, trwy ymatal yn y pleidlais, a'r Democrat Rhyddfrydol trwy beidio â phleidleisio o gwbl, alluogi Llywodraeth Lafur Cymru i barhau i symud ymlaen heb strategaeth solar.

“Pe bai Plaid Cymru a'r Democrat Rhyddfrydol wedi ymuno â'r aelodau Ceidwadol Cymreig ac annibynnol ar 11 Mehefin 2025, gallai'r penderfyniad ar fferm solar Alaw Môn fod wedi'i rwystro tra bod strategaeth solar yn cael ei chreu ar gyfer Cymru.”
