Conwy Council Cabinet Slammed for Supporting Llandudno Library Move / Beirniadu Cabinet Cyngor Conwy am gefnogi’r cynnig i symud Llyfrgell Llandudno

Llandudno Library

Yesterday, despite major public opposition, the Conwy First, Welsh Labour, and Plaid Cymru Cabinet of Conwy County Borough Council voted in favour of moving the Library to Venue Cymru.

76% of library users have stated that they would find access to the service harder if it is moved to Venue Cymru.

Cllr Louise Emery has proven that the financial case is flawed, revealing that the £46,000 of saving listed as an electricity bill is incorrect, as the Local Authority is only liable for 38% of that bill.

There has been a major community campaign which has seen over 1000 back a petition opposing the move.

Commenting on the Cabinet decision, Janet Finch-Saunders MS said:

“I commend Cllr Louise Emery for succeeding to get a sound grip on the Local Authority’s figures, something all the Cabinet members had clearly failed to do. Her scrutiny has rightly embarrassed the Council on its shambolic management of this scheme and proven that the savings are thousands of pounds less than advertised.

“Unlike Cabinet members such as Cllr Julie Fallon who considers the move the right way forward; Cllr Goronwy Edwards who described the scheme as an exciting project; and Cllr Chris Cater who support the change despite receiving letters from constituents opposed; I believe that closing the library on Mostyn Street is a disastrous decision.

“It is clear that the Conwy First, Plaid Cymru, and Welsh Labour leadership in this Local Authority have failed to listen to locals.”

ENDS

Ddoe, er gwaethaf gwrthwynebiad cyhoeddus mawr, pleidleisiodd Cabinet Conwy yn Gyntaf, Llafur Cymru, a Phlaid Cymru o blaid symud y Llyfrgell i Venue Cymru.

Mae 76% o ddefnyddwyr y llyfrgell wedi dweud y byddai mynediad at y gwasanaeth yn anoddach iddynt pe bai'n cael ei symud i Venue Cymru.

Mae'r Cynghorydd Louise Emery wedi profi bod yr achos ariannol yn un diffygiol, gan ddatgelu bod yr arbedion o £46,000 a restrir, fel y bil trydan, yn anghywir, gan mai dim ond am 38% o'r bil hwnnw y mae’r Awdurdod Lleol yn atebol.

Bu ymgyrch gymunedol fawr a welodd dros 1000 yn cefnogi deiseb yn gwrthwynebu'r symud.

Gan gyfeirio at benderfyniad y Cabinet, dywedodd Janet Finch-Saunders AS:

"Rwy'n canmol y Cynghorydd Louise Emery am lwyddo i gael gafael cadarn ar ffigurau'r Awdurdod Lleol, rhywbeth roedd holl aelodau'r Cabinet yn amlwg wedi methu â’i wneud. Mae ei chraffu wedi codi cywilydd ar y Cyngor a’i reolaeth warthus o'r cynllun hwn, a phrofwyd bod yr arbedion yn filoedd o bunnoedd yn is na’r hyn a nodwyd.

"Yn wahanol i aelodau'r Cabinet fel y Cynghorydd Julie Fallon sydd o’r farn mai’r cynnig i symud yw’r ffordd iawn ymlaen; y Cynghorydd Goronwy Edwards a ddisgrifiodd y cynllun fel prosiect cyffrous; a'r Cynghorydd Chris Cater sy'n cefnogi'r newid er gwaethaf derbyn llythyrau gan etholwyr sy'n gwrthwynebu’r cynnig; rwy'n credu bod cau'r llyfrgell ar Stryd Mostyn yn benderfyniad trychinebus.

"Mae'n amlwg bod Conwy yn Gyntaf, Plaid Cymru, ac arweinyddiaeth Llafur Cymru yn yr Awdurdod Lleol hwn wedi methu â gwrando ar bobl leol."
