Today, it has been announced that Rolls-Royce SMR has been selected as the preferred bidder to build the country’s first small modular reactors. This follows a rigorous two year competition.
This project has the potential to support up to 3,000 jobs at peak construction and power the equivalent of around 3 million of today’s homes.
Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, who has long advocated for nuclear projects, and as such, welcomes this announcement.
Commenting on the Rolls-Royce SMR’s selection Janet said:
“The announcement of Rolls-Royce being selected to deliver the first small modular nuclear reactors in the UK is very welcome.
“I have long called for nuclear projects to be developed in Wales, and we saw great progress towards delivering this thanks to the previous UK Conservative Government.
“As GBN owns land for potential new nuclear development at Wylfa on Ynys Môn, and Trawsfynydd already has a site development company, there is nowhere better than North West Wales for SMRs to be placed.”

Heddiw, cyhoeddwyd bod cwmni Rolls-Royce wedi’i ddewis fel y cynigydd a ffefrir i adeiladu’r adweithyddion modiwlar bach (SMRs) cyntaf yn y DU. Mae hyn yn dilyn cystadleuaeth drwyadl dros ddwy flynedd.
Mae gan y prosiect hwn y potensial i gynnal hyd at 3,000 o swyddi yn ystod y prif gyfnod adeiladu, yn ogystal â phweru’r hyn sy’n cyfateb i tua 3 miliwn o gartrefi modern.
Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi cefnogi prosiectau niwclear ers amser maith, ac mae’n croesawu’r cyhoeddiad hwn.
Wrth drafod y penderfyniad i ddewis cwmni Rolls-Royce, meddai Janet:
“Mae’r cyhoeddiad bod cwmni Rolls-Royce wedi cael ei ddewis i gyflenwi’r adweithyddion niwclear modiwlar bach cyntaf yn y DU i’w groesawu.
“Dwi wedi bod yn gofyn am ddatblygu prosiectau niwclear yng Nghymru ers tro byd, ac fe welsom gynnydd mawr tuag at gyflawni’r nod hwn diolch i Lywodraeth Geidwadol flaenorol y DU.
“Gan fod GBN yn berchen ar dir ar gyfer datblygiad niwclear newydd posibl yn Wylfa ar Ynys Môn, a bod cwmni datblygu’r safle eisoes yn bodoli yn Nhrawsfynydd, Gogledd-orllewin Cymru yw’r lle delfrydol ar gyfer SMRs.”
