Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy is concerned that Welsh Labour’s U-turn over the weekend on the 20mph policy will mean more taxpayer’s money is squandered.
In response to the widespread public outcry over the implementation of the £34 million default 20mph speed limit policy across Wales, certain roads could be reinstated to a 30mph limit.
Transport Secretary Ken Skates said the changes address the concerns that "a lot of people" have raised "on a consistent basis”, and thus "we've put our hands up to say the guidance has to be corrected.”
However, while Swansea council leader Rob Stewart welcomed the change, he has noted that the government must help foot the bill to swap signage. Janet has already highlighted this issue and previously requested local authorities to preserve the old 30mph signs in anticipation of leadership changes and the forthcoming review.
Commenting on the news Janet said:
“Although I appreciate that the Welsh Government is staring to listen to the public and Welsh Conservative group, I am deeply concerned about the significant cost this will impose on our taxpayers and local authorities.
“When the review is complete and sanity has prevailed, who is going to foot the bill to make the changes necessary? £30 million has already been spent on introducing this policy with new signs erected across Wales, polluting and cluttering our beautiful quaint hamlets, villages and towns.
“This policy has been an absolute disaster from day one. Almost 1 in 6 people in Wales not only disagree with the policy but have actively signed a petition outlining their opposition to the policy.
“With a new First Minister in place, as I anticipated, a cosmetic change in direction is now underway. Therefore I hope that local authorities have kept the 30mph signs they removed. Otherwise the incompetence of the Welsh Government is going to come with a hefty price tag.
“This is yet another instance of a government disconnected from the people's priorities and demonstrating an astonishing track record of pouring taxpayers money in the gutter.”

Fodd bynnag, tra bod arweinydd cyngor Abertawe, Rob Stewart, wedi croesawu'r newid, mae wedi nodi bod yn rhaid i'r llywodraeth helpu i dalu’r bil am unrhyw arwyddion newydd. Mae Janet eisoes wedi tynnu sylw at y mater hwn ac wedi gofyn yn y gorffennol i awdurdodau lleol gadw’r hen arwyddion 30mya gan ragweld newidiadau i arweinyddiaeth a'r adolygiad sydd ar ddod.
Wrth sôn am y newyddion, dywedodd Janet:
"Er fy mod yn gwerthfawrogi bod Llywodraeth Cymru yn dechrau gwrando ar y cyhoedd a’r grŵp Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, rwy'n bryderus iawn am y gost sylweddol i’n trethdalwyr ac i awdurdodau lleol.
"Pan fydd yr adolygiad wedi'i gwblhau a phawb wedi dod at eu coed, pwy sy'n mynd i dalu’r bil i wneud y newidiadau angenrheidiol? Mae £30 miliwn eisoes wedi'i wario ar gyflwyno'r polisi hwn gydag arwyddion newydd wedi'u codi ledled Cymru, gan lygru a chreithio ein pentrefannau, pentrefi a threfi hardd.
"Mae'r polisi hwn wedi bod yn drychineb llwyr o'r dechrau’n deg. Mae bron i 1 o bob 6 o bobl yng Nghymru nid yn unig yn anghytuno â'r polisi ond wedi arwyddo deiseb yn amlinellu eu gwrthwynebiad i'r polisi.
"Gyda Phrif Weinidog newydd, yn unol â’r disgwyl, mae newid cyfeiriad cosmetig bellach ar y gweill. Felly, rwy'n gobeithio bod awdurdodau lleol wedi cadw'r arwyddion 30mya a dynnwyd. Fel arall, mae traed moch Llywodraeth Cymru yn mynd i gostio’n ddrud dros ben.
"Dyma enghraifft arall eto fyth o lywodraeth sy’n ddi-glem am flaenoriaethau'r bobl – llywodraeth sydd wedi dangos hanes rhyfeddol o luchio arian trethdalwyr i’r gwter."
