Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has written to Mark Drakeford MS, First Minister, asking for a referendum on his Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru co-operation Welsh Government’s plan to increase the size of the Welsh Parliament from 60 to 96 members.

Mrs Finch-Saunders has outlined to the First Minister that he has “no mandate on this matter”.

The 2021 Welsh Labour manifesto makes a commitment to lead a national discussion and develop proposals to improve representation, not implement major changes without directly consulting the people of Wales.

Similarly, even the Plaid Cymru manifesto did not commit to increasing the size of the Welsh Parliament to 96 members. Their document highlighted a report that recommends between 80 and 90 members, not 96.

Commenting on the fact that Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru are pursuing major constitutional change without a democratic mandate, Janet said:

“The people of Wales did not vote for a 60% increase in politicians in 2021.

“Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru didn’t even include the number, 96, nor costs, between £100 million and £120 million, in their manifestos in 2021.

“They have no mandate to be pursuing this major constitutional reform.

“A referendum should be held. I suspect that Labour and Plaid will not agree because who on earth would vote to have even more politicians in Wales now?!”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi ysgrifennu at y Prif Weinidog Mark Drakeford AS yn gofyn am refferendwm ar gynllun Llywodraeth Cymru yn seiliedig ar y Cytundeb Cydweithio rhwng Llafur Cymru a Phlaid Cymru i gynyddu maint Senedd Cymru o 60 i 96 aelod.

Mae Mrs Finch-Saunders wedi amlinellu i'r Prif Weinidog nad oes ganddo "fandad ar y mater hwn”.

Mae maniffesto Llafur Cymru 2021 yn gwneud ymrwymiad i arwain trafodaeth genedlaethol a datblygu cynigion i wella cynrychiolaeth, nid gweithredu newidiadau mawr heb ymgynghori â phobl Cymru yn uniongyrchol.

Yn yr un modd, nid oedd maniffesto Plaid Cymru hyd yn oed yn ymrwymo i gynyddu maint Senedd Cymru i 96 aelod. Roedd eu dogfen yn argymell rhwng 80 a 90 o aelodau, nid 96.

Wrth sôn am y ffaith bod Llafur Cymru a Phlaid Cymru yn ceisio sicrhau newid cyfansoddiadol mawr heb fandad democrataidd, dywedodd Janet:

“Wnaeth pobl Cymru ddim pleidleisio dros 60% yn fwy o wleidyddion yn ôl yn 2021.

“Doedd Llafur Cymru a Phlaid Cymru ddim hyd yn oed yn cynnwys y nifer, 96, na'r costau, rhwng £100 miliwn a £120 miliwn, yn eu maniffestos yn 2021.

“Does ganddyn nhw ddim mandad i fwrw ymlaen â diwygiad cyfansoddiadol mor fawr.

“Dylai refferendwm gael ei gynnal. Rwy'n amau na fydd Llafur a Phlaid Cymru yn cytuno oherwydd pwy ar y ddaear fyddai'n pleidleisio i gael hyd yn oed mwy o wleidyddion yng Nghymru ar hyn o bryd?!
