Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, and Virginia Crosbie MP for Ynys Môn, have joined with the British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) in calling for the Welsh Government to do more to help the Welsh metal recycling sector decarbonise.
The UK metals recycling sector is worth at least £7 billion per year to the UK economy, providing more than 15,000 jobs across 2,000 businesses. These businesses are based across the entirety of the UK, including 24 sites in Wales.
During a visit to one of those businesses, Phoenix Metals & Demolition Ltd, Gaerwen, Anglesey, the elected members saw first-hand how the family team are pursuing excellent green initiatives such as:
- De-polluting vehicles in their fully equipped de-pollution shed;
- All fluids, tyres and batteries being sent for recycling.
Commenting after the visit, Janet said:
“We have seen first-hand the fantastic effort by Phoenix Metals & Demolition Ltd to ensure that their business has a positive impact on the environment.
“Business is doing its part, but there is an opportunity for the Welsh Government to do more.
“There are still significant barriers preventing the sector from reaching net zero targets. This includes ensuring that all metal recycling sites have connection to the grid as well as the need for greater investment in new and emerging technologies.”

Yn ystod ymweliad ag un o'r busnesau hynny, Phoenix Metals & Demolition Ltd, Gaerwen, Ynys Môn, gwelodd yr aelodau etholedig drostynt eu hunain sut mae'r tîm teuluol yn gweithredu mentrau gwyrdd rhagorol fel:
- Cerbydau dadlygru yn eu sied dadlygru llawn offer;
- Mae'r holl hylifau, teiars a batris yn cael eu hanfon i'w hailgylchu.
Wrth sôn am yr ymweliad, dywedodd Janet:
"Rydyn ni wedi gweld dros ein hunain ymdrech wych Phoenix Metals & Demolition Ltd i sicrhau bod eu busnes yn cael effaith gadarnhaol ar yr amgylchedd.
"Mae busnesau yn gwneud yr hyn a allan nhw, ond mae cyfle i Lywodraeth Cymru wneud mwy.
"Mae rhwystrau sylweddol yn dal i atal y sector rhag cyrraedd targedau sero net. Mae hyn yn cynnwys sicrhau bod gan bob safle ailgylchu metel gysylltiad â'r grid yn ogystal â'r angen am fwy o fuddsoddiad mewn technolegau newydd a rhai sy'n dod i'r amlwg."
Wrth siarad am bwysigrwydd Phoenix Metals & Demolition Ltd i Ynys Môn, dywedodd Virginia:
