Welsh Government “Going Round in Circles on the A470” / Llywodraeth Cymru yn “mynd rownd mewn cylchoedd ar yr A470”

Mark Drakeford MS, First Minister, stated yesterday that Welsh Government officials are putting a business case to the National Transport Delivery Plan Board to include a new WelTAG study of the A470 between Glan Conwy and Betws y Coed.

He made the statement in response to the oral question tabled by Janet Finch-Saunders MS, and following the promise made by Lee Waters MS, Deputy Minister for Climate Change on 8 July 2021 that “In the next financial year 2022/23, we will be undertaking a WelTAG stage 1 appraisal of the route from Glan Conwy to Betws y Coed.”

Commenting on the fact that the Welsh Government is now looking to develop a business case for a WelTAG study that they should have been carrying out this year, Janet said:

“The promised WelTAG Stage 1 review of the A470 between Glan Conwy and Betws has been cancelled.

“The Deputy Minister for Climate Change has apologised for wrongly advising that the section will fall under the North Wales Transport Commission.

“And now the First Minister’s Welsh Government is putting a business case together for a WelTAG Stage 1 study that we should have been having this year anyway!

“I am tired of the Welsh Government promising one thing and doing the other. They are literally going round in circles on the A470 in Aberconwy.

“From Glan Conwy to Betws y Coed a series of improvements are required to make the A470 safer.

“North Wales Police have disclosed that during the last 10 years, in the area within 1 mile either side of Erw Glas in Maenan, there have been 53 collisions.

“The centre of Llanrwst encounters traffic jams on a daily basis, and a motorcyclist recently died after being involved in a crash on the A470 near Zip World Fforest.

“Aberconwy needs action on the A470, and I will keep challenging the First Minister and Deputy Minister for Climate Change until they deliver.”

Dywedodd Mark Drakeford AS, Prif Weinidog Cymru, ddoe fod swyddogion Llywodraeth Cymru yn cyflwyno achos busnes i Fwrdd y Cynllun Cyflawni Trafnidiaeth Cenedlaethol i gynnwys astudiaeth newydd Arweiniad ar Arfarnu Trafnidiaeth Cymru (WelTAG) o'r A470 rhwng Glan Conwy a Betws-y-coed.

Gwnaeth y datganiad mewn ymateb i'r cwestiwn llafar a gyflwynwyd gan Janet Finch-Saunders AS, ac yn dilyn addewid Lee Waters AS, y Dirprwy Weinidog Newid Hinsawdd ar 8 Gorffennaf 2021, "Yn y flwyddyn ariannol nesaf 2022/23, byddwn yn cynnal gwerthusiad cam 1 WelTAG o'r llwybr o Lan Conwy i Fetws-y-coed."

Wrth sôn am y ffaith bod Llywodraeth Cymru nawr yn bwriadu datblygu achos busnes ar gyfer astudiaeth WelTAG y dylen nhw fod wedi bod yn ei chynnal eleni, dywedodd Janet:

"Mae'r adolygiad a gafodd ei addo yng ngham 1 y WelTAG o'r A470 rhwng Glan Conwy a Betws wedi'i ganslo.

"Mae'r Dirprwy Weinidog Newid Hinsawdd wedi ymddiheuro am gynghori ar gam y bydd yr adran yn dod o dan Gomisiwn Trafnidiaeth Gogledd Cymru.

"A rwan mae Llywodraeth Cymru y Prif Weinidog yn llunio achos busnes ar gyfer astudiaeth cam 1 WelTAG y dylem fod wedi'i chael eleni beth bynnag!

"Dwi wedi laru clywed Llywodraeth Cymru yn addo un peth ac yn gwneud rhywbeth arall. Maen nhw'n llythrennol yn mynd rownd mewn cylchoedd ar yr A470 yn Aberconwy.

"O Lan Conwy i Fetws-y-coed, mae angen cyfres o welliannau i wneud yr A470 yn fwy diogel.

"Mae Heddlu Gogledd Cymru wedi datgelu, yn ystod y 10 mlynedd diwethaf, yn yr ardal o fewn 1 filltir y naill ochr i Erw Glas ym Maenan, bod 53 o wrthdrawiadau wedi bod.

"Mae canol Llanrwst yn wynebu tagfeydd traffig dyddiol, a bu farw beiciwr modur yn ddiweddar ar ôl bod mewn damwain ar yr A470 ger Zip World Fforest.

"Mae angen i Aberconwy weld gweithredu ar yr A470, a byddaf yn parhau i herio'r Prif Weinidog a'r Dirprwy Weinidog Newid Hinsawdd hyd nes y byddan nhw wedi gwneud hynny."
