Aberconwy MS secures positive progress on Llwyn Brith crossing concern

In continuing to push the matter forward via correspondence with the Welsh Government, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy – Janet Finch-Saunders MS – has welcomed confirmation that the pedestrian crossing assessment carried out at Llwyn Brith in Llanrwst has been received in draft.

Further progress will be made, according to a letter from the Deputy Minister once a final version has been received. With regards to other road safety concerns along the route, Lee Waters MS wrote:

“In relation to the assessment of the walked route to school and request for a part time 20mph speed limit, that assessment has concluded and notes that the Welsh Government are working towards a national default 20 mph speed limit coming into force across Wales in 2023. This means that all restricted roads (those with street lighting) in Wales currently subject to a 30mph road speed limit would, by default, then become 20 mph.

Commenting on the letter received, Janet said:

“Having worked on this serious road safety issue throughout the previous Senedd and into this new term, I am pleased to have been presented with a positive letter of progress from the Welsh Government which confirms that the pedestrian crossing assessment has been carried out and is awaiting the submission of the final draft.

“Whilst it is disappointing the amount of time that has elapsed since first highlighting this concern, I do accept that the assessment needed to be paused so as to ensure that local pedestrian flows were not affected by the pandemic. It is crucial that any progression of this matter recognises the necessity for change, as I trust will be proven in the data.

“This issue remains of considerable concern for residents on both sides of the A470, who face the challenge of crossing this highway safely on a daily basis. Working in lockstep with the local community, I am committed to pushing the Welsh Government to deliver a sensible and long-term solution that benefits both road users and pedestrians, protecting our children and vulnerable.”
