Shadow Minister for Social Services Secures Commitment for Young Carers from Welsh Government

With young carers across Wales selflessly giving their time to help and support others, Janet Finch-Saunders AM, Shadow Minister for Social Care, successfully challenged the Welsh Government over its lack of support to those young champions who are unable to continue in education or apprenticeships because of a fear of losing their carers' allowance. Indeed, she has won the Deputy Minister’s commitment to consider the Welsh Conservative proposal of introducing a Young Adult Carers Futures Grant.

Janet said:

“It is fantastic news that Julie Morgan AM, Deputy Minister for Health and Social Services has agreed to consider the plan put forward by me in the Senedd.

“What I proposed was that the Welsh Government should introduce our Welsh Conservative plan of a £60 a week Young Adult Carers Futures Grant.

“What this grant would do is help address the serious problem that some young carers are unable to continue in education or apprenticeships because of a fear of losing their carers' allowance.

“Quite frankly, this situation is wrong as young carers have end up in this situation out of no fault of their own.

“The Welsh Government needs to be doing more to ensure that these young champions who selflessly look after a friend or family member can also plan for their own futures too.

“The Deputy Minister’s agreement is a major step forward, and I have already written to her asking for clarification as to when a decision will be made by her about my life changing grant”.
