Welsh Government to Ban Greyhound Racing / Llywodraeth Cymru i Wahardd Rasio Milgwn

As a longstanding advocate for animal welfare and a member of the cross-party group on greyhound racing, Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy has welcomed the Welsh Government’s announcement that greyhound racing will be banned in Wales as soon as practically possible.

The decision follows a government consultation, widespread public support, and mounting evidence that greyhound racing results in severe injuries and, in some cases, unnecessary euthanasia of dogs. Wales will be the first UK nation to take this bold action, setting an example for others to follow.

The Welsh Government has committed to ensuring a smooth transition, with an implementation group to oversee the winding down of the industry. This will include considerations for the welfare of greyhounds currently in the racing system, as well as the future of the Valley Stadium in Ystrad Mynach—the last remaining track in Wales.

Commenting on the news Janet said:

“This is a historic step forward for animal welfare in Wales. The evidence is clear—greyhound racing causes immense suffering to dogs.

“I am proud to have worked alongside colleagues from across the Senedd to push for this ban.

“I want to thank the incredible animal welfare organisations, including Dogs Trust and the RSPCA, who have been relentless in their efforts to secure this change.

“Today marks a victory for all those who believe in protecting animals. I will continue working to ensure the transition is handled responsibly.

“While the exact timeline for the ban has not yet been confirmed, the Welsh Government has indicated that it will act as swiftly as possible.

“This is a significant moment for Wales, and I urge England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland to follow our lead. It’s time to put an end to greyhound racing across the UK and ensure a safer, kinder future for these beautiful animals.”

Fel eiriolwr hirhoedlog dros les anifeiliaid ac aelod o'r grŵp trawsbleidiol ar rasio milgwn, mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi croesawu cyhoeddiad Llywodraeth Cymru y bydd rasio milgwn yn cael ei wahardd yng Nghymru cyn gynted ag sy’n ymarferol bosibl.

Daw'r penderfyniad yn dilyn ymgynghoriad gan y llywodraeth, cefnogaeth gyhoeddus eang, a thystiolaeth gynyddol bod rasio milgwn yn arwain at anafiadau difrifol ac, mewn rhai achosion, ewthanasia cŵn diangen. Cymru fydd y genedl gyntaf yn y DU i gymryd y camau beiddgar hyn, gan osod esiampl i eraill ei dilyn.

Mae Llywodraeth Cymru wedi ymrwymo i sicrhau pontio 0llyfn, gyda grŵp gweithredu i oruchwylio dirwyn y diwydiant i ben. Bydd hyn yn cynnwys ystyriaethau ar gyfer lles milgwn sydd yn y system rasio ar hyn o bryd, yn ogystal â dyfodol Stadiwm y Cwm yn Ystrad Mynach—y trac olaf yng Nghymru.

Wrth sôn am y newyddion dywedodd Janet:

"Dyma gam hanesyddol ymlaen i les anifeiliaid yng Nghymru. Mae'r dystiolaeth yn glir—mae rasio milgwn yn achosi dioddefaint aruthrol i gŵn.

"Rwy'n falch fy mod wedi gweithio ochr yn ochr â chydweithwyr o bob rhan o'r Senedd i bwyso am y gwaharddiad hwn.

"Hoffwn ddiolch i'r sefydliadau lles anifeiliaid anhygoel, gan gynnwys yr Ymddiriedolaeth Cŵn a'r RSPCA, sydd wedi bod wrthi’n ddiflino yn eu hymdrechion i sicrhau'r newid hwn.

"Mae heddiw yn fuddugoliaeth i bawb sy'n credu mewn amddiffyn anifeiliaid. Byddaf yn parhau i weithio i sicrhau bod y pontio hwn yn digwydd mewn modd cyfrifol.

"Er nad yw'r union amserlen ar gyfer y gwaharddiad wedi'i chadarnhau eto, mae Llywodraeth Cymru wedi dweud y bydd yn gweithredu mor gyflym â phosib.

"Mae hon yn foment arwyddocaol i Gymru, ac rwy'n annog Lloegr, yr Alban a Gogledd Iwerddon i ddilyn ein harweiniad. Mae'n bryd rhoi diwedd ar rasio milgwn ledled y DU a sicrhau dyfodol mwy diogel, mwy caredig i'r anifeiliaid hardd hyn."
