The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has said that the UK Government borrowed almost £15bn more than the £137.3bn expected in the year to March due to increased spending on pay and benefits.

The debt interest paid by the Government also increased by £1.3bn to £4.3bn last month.

The Government’s budget deficit was £74.6bn for the last fiscal year, £13.9bn higher than the OBR forecast.

The private sector activity contracted at the fastest pace in more than two years.

And the IMF has cut its 2025 growth forecast for the UK to 1.1%, down from 1.6%.

Commenting on the state of the UK finances, Janet said:

“Businesses are increasingly reporting serious struggles to keep their heads above water this month.

“Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer have failed to create an environment where businesses are encouraged to thrive and grow. On the contrary, their changes to national insurance and inheritance tax rules are devastating.

“It is no surprise at all that the International Monetary Fund has reduced its forecast for UK growth.

“Businesses are paying more to the state, employees are paying more to the state, yet the state of the public finances and national economy is getting worse. It set to continue on that trajectory as many now expect the UK Labour Government to increase taxation even further later this year.”

Mae'r Swyddfa Ystadegau Gwladol (SYG) wedi dweud bod Llywodraeth y DU wedi benthyca bron i £15bn yn fwy na'r £137.3bn disgwyliedig yn y flwyddyn hyd at fis Mawrth oherwydd cynnydd mewn gwariant ar gyflogau a budd-daliadau.

Cynyddodd llog y ddyled a dalwyd gan y Llywodraeth hefyd gan £1.3bn i £4.3bn fis diwethaf.

Roedd diffyg cyllideb y Llywodraeth yn £74.6bn ar gyfer y flwyddyn ariannol ddiwethaf, £13.9bn yn uwch na rhagolwg y Swyddfa Cyfrifoldeb Cyllidebol.

Fe wnaeth gweithgaredd y sector preifat grebachu ar ei lefel gyflymaf mewn mwy na dwy flynedd.

Ac mae'r Gronfa Ariannol Ryngwladol wedi torri ei rhagolwg twf yn 2025 ar gyfer y DU i 1.1%, i lawr o 1.6%.

Wrth sôn am gyflwr cyllid y DU, dywedodd Janet:

"Mae busnesau'n adrodd fwyfwy am frwydrau difrifol i gadw eu pennau uwchben y dŵr y mis hwn.

"Mae Rachel Reeves a Keir Starmer wedi methu â chreu amgylchedd lle mae busnesau'n cael eu hannog i ffynnu a thyfu. I'r gwrthwyneb, mae eu newidiadau i reolau yswiriant gwladol a threth etifeddiant yn cael effaith ddinistriol.

"Does dim syndod o gwbl bod y Gronfa Ariannol Ryngwladol wedi lleihau ei rhagolwg ar gyfer twf y DU.

"Mae busnesau'n talu mwy i'r wladwriaeth, mae gweithwyr yn talu mwy i'r wladwriaeth, ac eto mae cyflwr cyllid y wlad a'r economi genedlaethol yn gwaethygu. Mae'n mynd i barhau ar y trywydd hwnnw gan fod llawer bellach yn disgwyl i Lywodraeth Lafur y DU gynyddu trethiant hyd yn oed ymhellach yn ddiweddarach eleni."
