Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, has welcomed the announcement of LionLink, the world’s largest multi-use electricity power line that will be built under the North Sea, boosting UK energy supplies with enough to power 1.8 million homes.

While normal interconnectors only connect 2 countries, the multipurpose LionLink will join the UK and Netherlands to each other as well as simultaneously with offshore wind farms at the heart of the North Sea.

The UK Government is announcing the project as Energy Security Secretary Grant Shapps leads a British business delegation to the North Sea Summit in Belgium today, aiming to boost our collective energy security through new renewable energy and interconnector projects.

Commenting on the importance of energy security, Janet said:

“The UK Government is cooperating internationally to bolster our energy security and send a strong signal to Putin that the days of his dominance over global power markets are well and truly over.

“The new LionLink will carry 1.8GW of electricity, which builds on the 8.4GW interconnector capacity that the UK has, meaning more clean and affordable power for UK homes and businesses, including here in Wales.

“In cases where there is a surplus of wind generated electricity, it can be shared instantly to locations with a shortage of power, and vice versa.

“It makes sense to cooperate with allies to deploy every spare electron where it is needed most.”

The countries attending today’s summit alongside the UK are Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway and the Netherlands

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS, Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd yr Wrthblaid, wedi croesawu'r cyhoeddiad am LionLink, llinell ynni trydan aml-ddefnydd mwyaf y byd a fydd yn cael ei hadeiladu o dan Fôr y Gogledd, gan roi hwb i gyflenwadau ynni'r DU gyda digon o ynni i bweru 1.8 miliwn o gartrefi.

Tra bod rhyng-gysylltwyr arferol ond yn cysylltu 2 wlad, bydd y LionLink amlddiben yn cysylltu'r DU a'r Iseldiroedd gyda’i gilydd yn ogystal â ffermydd gwynt ar y môr yng nghanol Môr y Gogledd.

Mae Llywodraeth y DU yn cyhoeddi'r prosiect wrth i Grant Shapps, yr Ysgrifennydd Diogelwch Ynni, arwain taith o gynrychiolwyr busnes o Brydain i Uwchgynhadledd Môr y Gogledd yng Ngwlad Belg heddiw, gyda'r nod o roi hwb i'n diogelwch ynni cyfunol drwy brosiectau ynni adnewyddadwy a rhyng-gysylltiedig newydd.

Wrth sôn am bwysigrwydd diogelwch ynni, dywedodd Janet:

"Mae Llywodraeth y DU yn cydweithredu'n rhyngwladol i gryfhau ein diogelwch ynni ac anfon arwydd cryf i Putin bod dyddiau ei oruchafiaeth dros farchnadoedd pŵer y byd yn dod i ben.

"Bydd y LionLink newydd yn cludo 1.8GW o drydan, sy’n adeiladu ar y capasiti rhyng-gysylltiedig o 8.4GW sydd gan y DU, sy'n golygu ynni glanach a mwy fforddiadwy i gartrefi a busnesau'r DU, gan gynnwys yma yng Nghymru.

"Mewn achosion lle mae gwarged o drydan sy'n cael ei gynhyrchu gan wynt, gellir ei rannu'n syth i leoliadau gyda phrinder ynni, ac i'r gwrthwyneb.

"Mae'n gwneud synnwyr cydweithredu â chynghreiriaid i ddefnyddio pob electron dros ben lle mae ei angen fwyaf. "
