After an almost two-year delay with the Wild Oyster Project, due to the reef height and the way it was initially being laid, oysters are set to be reintroduced to Conwy Bay and Conwy Harbour.

Natural Resources Wales have agreed that Bangor University can move on to the final stage, which is to put down shells on top of the limestone bed and then put the oysters on top of the shells.

Harbourmaster Matthew Forbes, noted that last week they had bagged up 76 bags to be distributed to the site, with the first run taking place last Friday, being subject to weather.

Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy and the Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Climate Change, who has long campaigned for protections and restoration of the marine environment welcomed this news.

Commenting on the reintroduction of oysters, Janet said:

“This exciting project to bring wild oysters into Conwy Bay and Conwy Harbour, will help to strengthen and rebuild or vital marine environment. Through schemes like this and seagrass restoration projects, it will help to tackle the ever pressing challenge of a declining biodiversity.

“With the Welsh Government showing a lack of urgency in regards to addressing our declining biodiversity, with very little focus being placed on the marine environment, it is important that we champion and praise these schemes that are taking place.

“My sincere thanks goes to everyone involved, and I wish you all the very best with the implementation of the oysters.”

Ar ôl oedi bron i ddwy flynedd gyda'r Prosiect Wystrys Gwyllt, oherwydd uchder y riff a'r ffordd yr oedd wedi cael ei osod i ddechrau, mae wystrys ar fin cael eu hailgyflwyno ym Mae Conwy a Harbwr Conwy.

Mae Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru wedi cytuno y gall Prifysgol Bangor symud ymlaen i'r cam olaf, sef rhoi cregyn i lawr ar y gwely calchfaen ac yna rhoi'r wystrys ar ben y cregyn.

Nododd yr Harbwrfeistr Matthew Forbes eu bod yr wythnos diwethaf wedi llenwi 76 o fagiau i'w dosbarthu i'r safle, gyda'r rhediad cyntaf yn cael ei gynnal ddydd Gwener diwethaf, yn dibynnu ar y tywydd.

Cafodd y newyddion groeso brwd gan Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy a Gweinidog dros Newid Hinsawdd yr Wrthblaid y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, sydd wedi ymgyrchu ers amser maith i amddiffyn ac adfer yr amgylchedd morol.

Wrth sôn am ailgyflwyno wystrys, dywedodd Janet:

"Bydd y prosiect cyffrous hwn i ailgyflwyno wystrys gwyllt i Fae Conwy a Harbwr Conwy, yn helpu i gryfhau ac ailadeiladu amgylchedd morol hanfodol. Bydd cynlluniau o’r fath a phrosiectau adfer morwellt yn helpu i fynd i'r afael â'r her fythol a brys o fynd i’r afael â bioamrywiaeth sy'n dirywio.

"Gyda Llywodraeth Cymru yn llaesu dwylo o ran mynd i'r afael â thranc ein bioamrywiaeth, a fawr iawn o ffocws yn cael ei roi ar yr amgylchedd morol, mae'n bwysig ein bod yn hyrwyddo ac yn canmol y cynlluniau hyn sydd ar waith.

"Diolch o galon i bawb sy'n cymryd rhan, a dymuniadau gorau i chi gyda’ch ymdrechion i adfywio’r wystrys."
