MORE than 50 residents met to plan opposition to the closure of a pedestrian crossing over the railway line at Deganwy.
A planning inquiry is to be held later this year after Network Rail appealed against Conwy planners’ opposition to the closure of the crossing over the railway line close to Warren Drive and Glan y Mor Road, Deganwy.
The public meeting had been organised by Guto Bebb MP and Cllr Mike Priestley. Mr Bebb had said: “It is essential we try and coordinate our evidence and efforts to present a cohesive argument to the Planning Inspector at the public inquiry, and ensure the same evidence is not presented with different interpretations that could damage the case”.
He outlined the history of the closure to the meeting.
Local ward member cllr Mike Priestley said: “I am working with everyone involved to right this wrong and ensure as many as possible residents come forward with evidence to support our case to get the crossing re-opened.”
He outlined the public inquiry process to the meeting, explained what preparations were needed and how residents could best contribute and support. Mike further stressed the necessity for consistency and that a common argument was essential.
Cllr Sue Shotter, also a ward member said: “It was a really well attended meeting which showed the depth of feeling among residents. Now we get ourselves organised for the forthcoming public inquiry.”
AM Janet Finch-Saunders said: “I welcome the recent progress in this case, especially as the matter seems to have been delayed for such a long time. Surprisingly, it has taken eight years to reach this point.
"I urge residents to bring any potentially relevant evidence forward before 26 February so we can see whether the case in favour of reopening the crossing can be strengthened”.
