Labour Government Under Pressure to Overhaul Marine Policy as Oceans Hit Hottest Level / Llywodraeth Lafur dan bwysau i ailwampio polisi morol wrth i gefnforoedd gyrraedd eu lefelau poethaf erioed

With the average daily global sea surface temperature hitting the record this week, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Climate Change Minister, has reiterated her campaign to see the Labour Government overhaul marine policy to help achieve Net Zero by 2050. According to the EU's climate change service Copernicus, the sea surface temperature reached 20.96C. Warmer waters have less ability to absorb carbon dioxide, meaning more of that planet-warming gas will stay in the atmosphere.

Speaking of the high temperatures out at sea, Shadow Climate Change Minister, Janet Finch-Saunders MS said:

“The temperature record follows a series of marine heatwaves this year including in the UK, the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Mexico.

“With temperatures in UK waters 3C to 5C higher than average in June, it is time for the Labour Government to start taking marine policy seriously.

“Marine ecosystems can capture more carbon per acre than forests. 113 million tonnes of carbon is stored in the top 10cm of marine sediments in Wales. According to NRW that represents almost 170% of the carbon held by Welsh forests.

“Time after time I have been highlighting that whilst the Labour Government keep regarding Wales’s woodlands and peatbogs as being critical to our carbon strategy, they must treat marine and coastal ecosystems with greater priority.”

Gyda thymheredd dyddiol cyfartalog arwyneb y môr ar ei uchaf erioed yr wythnos hon, mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS, Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd yr Wrthblaid i’r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, wedi ailadrodd ei hymgyrch i weld y Llywodraeth Lafur yn ailwampio polisi morol er mwyn helpu i gyflawni Sero Net erbyn 2050. Yn ôl Copernicus, gwasanaeth newid hinsawdd yr UE, cyrhaeddodd tymheredd arwyneb y môr 20.96C. Mae gan ddyfroedd cynhesach lai o allu i amsugno carbon deuocsid, sy'n golygu y bydd mwy o'r nwy sy'n cynhesu'r blaned honno'n aros yn yr atmosffer.

Wrth siarad am y tymheredd uchel allan ar y môr, dywedodd Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd yr Wrthblaid i’r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, Janet Finch-Saunders AS:

“Mae'r tymheredd hwn yn torri record ac yn dilyn cyfres o gyfnodau crasboeth mewn gwahanol ardaloedd eleni gan gynnwys y DU, Gogledd yr Iwerydd, Môr y Canoldir a Gwlff Mecsico.

“Gyda thymheredd yn nyfroedd y DU 3C i 5C yn uwch na'r cyfartaledd ym mis Mehefin, mae'n bryd i’r Llywodraeth Lafur ddechrau cymryd polisi morol o ddifrif.

“Gall ecosystemau morol ddal mwy o garbon yr erw na choedwigoedd. Mae 113 miliwn tunnell o garbon yn cael ei storio yn y 10cm uchaf o waddodion morol yng Nghymru. Yn ôl CNC mae hynny'n cynrychioli bron i 170% o'r carbon sy'n cael ei ddal gan goedwigoedd Cymru.

“Dro ar ôl tro, rwyf wedi bod yn pwysleisio, er bod y Llywodraeth Lafur yn dweud a dweud bod coetiroedd a mawngorsydd Cymru yn hollbwysig i'n strategaeth garbon, mae’n rhaid iddyn nhw roi mwy o flaenoriaeth i'r ecosystemau morol ac arfordirol hefyd."
