King Charles III and Pope Leo XIV have been praised for “celebrating unity through diversity”.

The comments come from Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, who has emphasised the importance of the symbolism of heads of two different churches coming together at a time of increasing tensions across the world.

The King will become the first British monarch to pray with a pope since the 16th Century.

Commenting on the historic meeting, Janet said:

“His Majesty the King’s title as Defender of the Faith was first bestowed on the renowned Tudor monarch, King Henry VIII by Pope Leo X on 11 October 1521. 500 years later it is wonderful to see how the current King has evolved the title to reflect his longstanding work to build bridges between and defend all faiths.

“We live in a very challenging world where international partnerships are more important than ever. Stronger relations with the Vatican will be a bulwark against those promoting conflict, division, and tyranny.

“I thank both the King and Pope for celebrating unity through diversity. It is an example and lesson we should heed”.

Mae'r Brenin Siarl III a'r Pab Leo XIV wedi’u canmol am "ddathlu undod trwy amrywiaeth".

Daw'r sylwadau gan Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, sydd wedi pwysleisio pwysigrwydd symbolaeth penaethiaid dwy eglwys wahanol yn dod at ei gilydd ar adeg o densiynau cynyddol bedwar ban byd.

Y Brenin fydd y brenin Prydeinig cyntaf i weddïo gyda phab ers yr 16eg ganrif.

Gan gyfeirio at y cyfarfod hanesyddol, dywedodd Janet:

"Rhoddwyd teitl Ei Fawrhydi y Brenin fel Amddiffynnwr y Ffydd gyntaf i'r brenin Tuduraidd enwog, Brenin Harri VIII gan y Pab Leo X ar 11 Hydref 1521. 500 mlynedd yn ddiweddarach mae'n wych gweld sut mae'r Brenin presennol wedi datblygu'r teitl i adlewyrchu ei waith hirsefydlog i adeiladu pontydd rhwng pob ffydd a’u hamddiffyn.

"Rydyn ni’n byw mewn byd heriol iawn lle mae partneriaethau rhyngwladol yn bwysicach nag erioed. Bydd cysylltiadau cryfach â'r Fatican yn safiad yn erbyn y rhai sy'n hyrwyddo gwrthdaro, rhaniad a gormes.

"Rwy'n diolch i'r Brenin a'r Pab am ddathlu undod trwy amrywiaeth. Mae'n esiampl a gwers y dylem dalu sylw iddyn nhw".
