The COP30 climate summit ran by the United Nations, is taking place in Brazil. This COP offers an opportunity for us to focus on the deforestation of the rainforest, which is especially poignant since this globally significant conference its taking place near the rainforest.
Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, and the Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, welcomes COP30 and stated:
“COP30 taking place in Brazil, the home of the Amazon Rainforest, offers us a fantastic opportunity to reflect on the role that we have as part of Wales and the UK as a whole on deforestation.
“Tropical rainforests are disappearing at a faster rate than even compared with last year, and unfortunately, we are all playing a small role in that. Through the imports of commodities like palm oil, soy, beef, and timber, we are contributing to the destruction of some of the greatest carbon stores and most precious habitats in the world.
“However, as shown in South East Asia, forest loss can be slowed down by working together. And we can all do this by making more conscious decisions about the products we buy.”
