Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Senedd for Bangor, Conwy and Môn, wrote to The Rt Hon Anna Turley MP, the Minister of State for Border Security and Asylum, expressing her strong opposition to the proposed use of two properties in Llandudno for asylum dispersal accommodation.
The Minister has responded:
“Procurement of dispersed accommodation, which offers better value for money, is informed by Asylum Accommodation Plans. These plans consider a range of factors, such as access to local services and social cohesion, to provide an evidence-based approach to procurement.
“I would like to offer reassurance that engagement with local authorities is a central tenet of dispersal. Under the current processes, nominated local authority officials are consulted prior to the procurement of every dispersal property, including those within the local authority remit of Conwy County Borough Council.”
Janet has written a second letter to the Home Office in response, commenting:
“I am not reassured by the Home Office’s refusal to comment on specific sites. Decisions affecting Welsh communities must not be imposed from Whitehall without transparency.”
Janet continued:
“While the United Kingdom must remain compassionate, we must consider our families and vulnerable residents across North Wales, who are facing acute housing shortages, homelessness and lengthy waits for suitable accommodation. Their needs must not be treated as secondary.”
