Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Bangor Conwy Môn, has expressed significant concern regarding the continued delays to the opening of the Llandudno Orthopaedic Hub, as its opening has now been pushed back for the fifth time.
The hub was originally set to open in early 2025, but is now expected to open before the end of 2026. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has stated that the most recent delays are due to the comprehensive checks required before the centre can begin treating patients. These include rigorous testing of all systems, equipment and environmental controls.
Janet commented:
“This facility was designed to take pressure off our hospitals and reduce waiting lists for orthopaedic surgery, yet with these continuous delays to its opening, that pressure remains.
“This is even more concerning, with a Senior Clinician reporting to me, that the current Abergele Orthopaedics Theatre is performing on average 12 operating sessions per week compared to the target of 20.
“While it is essential that these rigorous checks are undertaken, they should have been factored into the original opening date. I have championed the opening of this site for years, and I will continue to press for answers and demand that every effort is made to get this facility open and treating patients.
“Patients across North Wales cannot afford to wait any longer. The people who have been waiting months, and in some cases years, for treatment deserve action, not another delay.”
