MS Calls for Urgent Action to Protect Penrhos Nature Reserve

Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Senedd for Bangor, Conwy and Môn, has been a strong advocate against the proposed development of Penrhos Nature Reserve.

Penrhos receives around 100,000 visitors each year, making it one of the most visited sites on Ynys Môn. It is also home to endangered species and vital habitats, including those supporting the iconic red squirrel.

It is vital that the owners of Penrhos do not overdevelop this precious area. Any development must be carried out sensitively, with the nature reserve, the environment and its wildlife at the heart of every decision.

The 500 lodges, the restaurant, the facilities and significant increase in parking spaces proposed in the planning application are excessive and risk causing serious harm to this vital environment. Protecting Penrhos will become even more important as we face the growing impacts of climate change.

Janet was delighted to visit and walk around the reserve with Hilary Paterson-Jones and Director Katuma McLaughlin, who have been leading the call for this essential site to be protected and preserved for future generations.

Following the visit Janet commented:

“I would like to thank Hilary and Katuma, for showing me around the reserve. Penrhos Nature Reserve is far too precious to be sacrificed to overdevelopment. This is not just an area of outstanding natural beauty; it is a vital home for endangered wildlife, including our iconic red squirrels, and a much-loved destination for around 100,000 visitors every year.

“The proposed 500 lodges and extensive additional parking are excessive and risk causing lasting damage to this irreplaceable environment. As we face the increasing impacts of climate change, protecting our natural spaces has never been more important.

“Any development at Penrhos must be genuinely sympathetic to its surroundings, with the protection of the reserve, its habitats and its wildlife placed firmly at the heart of every decision.”
