Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Senedd for Bangor, Conwy and Môn, has raised deep concerns about the resilience of Wales’s public transport infrastructure following the cancellation of train services between Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog during severe weather on 12 August, followed by further cancellations on 13 August as additional trains required repairs.

While services on the line have now returned to normal, the disruption highlights the urgent need for Wales’s rail infrastructure to be strengthened and adapted so that it can operate reliably in increasingly frequent periods of extreme weather.

Janet commented:

“For many people public transport is a lifeline, with people relying on trains to get to work, attend important medical and other appointments, and for tourists to easily travel across Wales. When services are cancelled at short notice, it can have a serious impact on people’s lives.

“As extreme weather becomes more frequent, we must ensure that our rail infrastructure is resilient enough to withstand these conditions and keep people moving. Passengers deserve a public transport network they can rely on, whatever the weather.

“The recent disruption between Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog should be a wake-up call. We need investment and long-term planning to ensure that Wales’s rail infrastructure is fit for the future and capable of providing a dependable service when people need it most.”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Fangor Conwy Môn, wedi codi pryderon mawr am wydnwch seilwaith trafnidiaeth gyhoeddus Cymru yn dilyn canslo gwasanaethau trên rhwng Llandudno a Blaenau Ffestiniog yn ystod tywydd eithafol ar 12 Awst, ac yna canslo gwasanaethau pellach ar 13 Awst gan fod angen gwaith atgyweirio trenau ychwanegol.

Er bod gwasanaethau ar y llinell bellach yn ôl i’r arfer, mae’r tarfu yn tynnu sylw at yr angen brys i gryfhau ac addasu seilwaith rheilffyrdd Cymru fel y gall weithredu’n ddibynadwy mewn cyfnodau o dywydd eithafol sy’n digwydd yn gynyddol aml.

Meddai Janet:

“I lawer o bobl mae trafnidiaeth gyhoeddus yn hollol hanfodol, gyda phobl yn dibynnu ar drenau i gyrraedd y gwaith, mynychu apwyntiadau meddygol pwysig ac apwyntiadau eraill, ac i dwristiaid deithio’n hawdd ledled Cymru. Pan fydd gwasanaethau’n cael eu canslo ar fyr rybudd, gall gael effaith ddifrifol ar fywydau pobl.

“Gyda thywydd eithafol yn dod yn fwy cyffredin, mae’n rhaid i ni sicrhau bod ein seilwaith rheilffyrdd yn ddigon gwydn i wrthsefyll yr amodau hyn a chadw pobl i symud. Mae teithwyr yn haeddu rhwydwaith trafnidiaeth gyhoeddus y gallan nhw ddibynnu arno, beth bynnag yw’r tywydd.

“Dylai’r helynt diweddar rhwng Llandudno a Blaenau Ffestiniog fod yn wers i ni. Mae angen buddsoddiad a chynllunio hirdymor arnom i sicrhau bod seilwaith rheilffyrdd Cymru yn addas ar gyfer y dyfodol ac yn gallu darparu gwasanaeth dibynadwy pan fydd pobl ei angen fwyaf.”
