OFWAT has announced that Dŵr Cymru is set to payout £44.7 million after failures in its sewage network and oversight led to a series of spills.

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Senedd for Bangor Conwy Môn, has consistently challenged Dŵr Cymru over these incidents and has repeatedly raised the issue in the Senedd chamber.

Janet commented:

“It is deeply concerning that these incidents continue to occur despite repeated reassurances from Dŵr Cymru. Immediate action is needed to address the root causes, particularly as we approach the summer months, when residents and visitors will be spending more time on Wales’s beaches and waterways.

“With our local economy, especially in my constituency, so heavily dependent on tourism, it is essential that every possible precaution is taken to prevent further spills.

“I welcome the commitment of £40.6 million to reduce spills at specific overflows and help mitigate the environmental damage they cause, alongside the additional £4.1 million earmarked for improving river quality.

“However, Dŵr Cymru must go further. Alongside addressing the consequences of these failures, greater emphasis must be placed on preventing them from happening in the first place.”

Mae OFWAT wedi cyhoeddi bod Dŵr Cymru ar fin talu £44.7 miliwn ar ôl i fethiannau yn ei rwydwaith carthffosiaeth a goruchwylio arwain at gyfres o ollyngiadau.

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o'r Senedd dros Fangor Conwy Môn, wedi herio Dŵr Cymru yn gyson am y digwyddiadau hyn ac wedi codi'r mater dro ar ôl tro yn siambr y Senedd.

Meddai Janet:

"Mae'n achos pryder mawr fod y digwyddiadau hyn yn parhau i ddigwydd er gwaethaf sicrwydd dro ar ôl tro gan Dŵr Cymru. Mae angen gweithredu ar unwaith i fynd i'r afael â'r achosion sylfaenol, yn enwedig wrth i fisoedd yr haf agosáu, ac wrth i drigolion ac ymwelwyr dreulio mwy o amser ar draethau a dyfrffyrdd Cymru.

"Gyda'n heconomi leol, yn enwedig yn fy etholaeth i, mor ddibynnol ar dwristiaeth, mae'n hanfodol bod pob cam posibl yn cael ei gymryd i atal gollyngiadau pellach.

"Rwy'n croesawu'r ymrwymiad o £40.6 miliwn i leihau gollyngiadau mewn gorlifoedd penodol a helpu i liniaru'r difrod amgylcheddol y maen nhw’n ei achosi, ochr yn ochr â'r £4.1 miliwn ychwanegol sydd wedi'i glustnodi ar gyfer gwella ansawdd afonydd.

"Fodd bynnag, mae'n rhaid i Dŵr Cymru fynd yr ail filltir. Law yn llaw â mynd i'r afael â chanlyniadau'r methiannau hyn, rhaid rhoi mwy o bwyslais ar eu hatal rhag digwydd yn y lle cyntaf."
