For several months, Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Bangor Conwy Môn, has raised serious concerns about corridor care taking place and has continuously called for it to urgently come to an end.
Janet commented:
“For too long, I have heard from constituents and medical professionals about the extent of corridor care taking place in Wales. We have heard of people being treated in corridors, uncomfortable chairs and, in some instances, cupboards.
“These extensive waits, and treatment like this taking place, not only cause our residents, in some instances, to refuse attending hospital, even when it is vital, due to their past experiences with corridor care, but they also have a negative impact on our medical practitioners, who are negatively affected by having to treat people without them having a proper hospital bed or treatment room.
“In addition to the extensive waiting times, and instances of people developing sores from waiting on chairs, we are unfortunately seeing instances of patients passing away while waiting for treatment. In March, sadly, a constituent of mine passed away in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd’s A&E department while waiting for treatment.
“However, an FOI I submitted showed that this was not a one-off occurrence. It highlighted that 1,027 people died while waiting for treatment in A&E in the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board area in the 24 months leading up to 30 September 2025.
“Next week, when the Senedd is back from recess, I have been allocated a question to the First Minister, which I will use to raise the serious nature of corridor care and call for corridor care to come to an end once and for all under this Government. I will keep everybody update.”
