In the outcome of Conwy County Borough Council’s review of default 20mph speed limits, ten roads in Aberconwy were recommended to be reverted back to 30mph from 20mph.
This review has followed two other reviews, one from the Welsh Government on trunk roads and the other previously from Conwy County Borough Council which has already seen road speed changes in the constituency.
Concerns have been raised by residents, motorists, and businesses across Aberconwy about the impact of the 20mph rollout. The policy has led to confusion and has affected local businesses as well as public transport. Repeated revisions have also raised wider questions about the policy itself and whether it should have been introduced in the first place.
Janet Finch-Saunders, Senedd Member for Aberconwy said:
“The fact that we are now seeing more roads recommended to revert back to 30mph shows that the original rollout of the 20mph scheme was rushed and poorly thought through.
Communities across Aberconwy raised concerns from the start, yet we are now going through repeated reviews and changes which only create further confusion for drivers.
Every time these limits are changed it means more public money being spent on signage, consultations and administrative work. At a time when public finances are under pressure, this repeated pattern of introducing policies and then correcting them is not a smart use of taxpayer’s money.”
