Volunteers from UK Youth for Nature and The Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales visited the Senedd this week to highlight the urgent need for stronger action to protect our freshwater environments.

Representatives from both organisations shared their concerns directly with Members of the Senedd, calling for more robust safeguards to restore the health of Wales’s rivers, streams, and wetlands. Their message was clear: without decisive intervention, the ecological condition of our waterways will continue to decline.

This follows Natural Resources Wales’s report on Welsh rivers, which underscored the pressing need for cleaner, healthier water systems and better management to slow water flow and reduce pollution. Their findings reinforce the importance of taking meaningful steps now to protect our freshwater ecosystems for future generations.

Janet commented:

“I was pleased to meet the volunteers and listen to their passionate case for safeguarding our freshwater habitats. Their dedication and willingness to speak up for nature is a reminder that we all share a responsibility to protect Wales’s natural environment.

The voices of young people and conservation volunteers are vital in shaping policy, and their call for stronger protections must be taken seriously. We need a clear plan to reduce pollution, restore our rivers, and ensure future generations inherit a healthy, thriving natural world.”

Ymwelodd gwirfoddolwyr o UK Youth for Nature ac Ymddiriedolaeth Natur De a Gorllewin Cymru â'r Senedd yr wythnos hon i dynnu sylw at yr angen brys am gamau gweithredu cryfach o lawer i ddiogelu ein hamgylcheddau dŵr croyw.

Rhannodd cynrychiolwyr o'r ddau sefydliad eu pryderon yn uniongyrchol ag Aelodau o'r Senedd, gan alw am fesurau diogelu mwy cadarn i adfer iechyd afonydd, nentydd a gwlyptiroedd Cymru. Roedd eu neges yn glir: heb ymyrraeth gadarn, bydd cyflwr ecolegol ein dyfrffyrdd yn parhau i ddirywio.

Mae hyn yn dilyn adroddiad gan Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru ar afonydd Cymru, a oedd yn pwysleisio'r angen dybryd am systemau dŵr glanach, iachach a rheolaeth well i arafu llif dŵr a lleihau llygredd. Mae eu canfyddiadau yn dangos pwysigrwydd cymryd camau ystyrlon nawr i amddiffyn ein hecosystemau dŵr croyw ar gyfer cenedlaethau'r dyfodol.

Meddai Janet:

"Roeddwn i'n falch o gwrdd â'r gwirfoddolwyr a gwrando ar eu hachos angerddol dros ddiogelu ein cynefinoedd dŵr croyw. Mae eu hymroddiad a'u parodrwydd i godi eu llais dros fyd natur yn ein hatgoffa ein bod ni i gyd yn rhannu cyfrifoldeb i ddiogelu amgylchedd naturiol Cymru.

Mae lleisiau pobl ifanc a gwirfoddolwyr cadwraeth yn hanfodol wrth lunio polisi, ac mae'n rhaid cymryd eu galwad am amddiffyniadau cryfach o ddifrif. Mae angen cynllun clir arnom i leihau llygredd, adfer ein hafonydd, a sicrhau bod cenedlaethau'r dyfodol yn etifeddu byd naturiol iach, ffyniannus."
