Wylfa

The announcement by Great British Energy - Nuclear (GBE-N) that Wylfa on Ynys Môn has been selected as the site for the UK’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) has been welcomed by Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Environment.

This strategic infrastructure project will deliver up to 1.5GW of low-carbon energy to the grid, supporting the UK’s net zero goals and enhancing energy security. The development will also bring significant economic benefits to Wales, including up to 3,000 jobs during peak construction and long-term career opportunities.

Commenting on the announcement, Janet said:

“This is fantastic news for Ynys Môn and Wales. The hundreds of long-term jobs that will be created will be a huge boost to communities and the Welsh language across North West Wales.

“I would like to thank all who have worked to secure this transformational outcome, especially Virginia Crosbie. Nobody can deny that she has been tireless in her work to deliver new nuclear at Wylfa.

“I look forward to seeing the opportunities created for students and apprenticeships, and sincerely hope that Bangor University and Coleg Menai will be empowered to have a major role in upskilling our local population for the amazing careers that will be created”.

Bydd y prosiect seilwaith strategol hwn yn darparu hyd at 1.5GW o ynni carbon isel i’r grid, gan gefnogi nodau sero net y DU a gwella diogelwch ynni. Bydd y datblygiad hefyd yn dod â manteision economaidd sylweddol i Gymru, gan gynnwys hyd at 3,000 o swyddi yn pan fydd y gwaith adeiladu ar ei anterth a chyfleoedd gyrfa hirdymor.

Gan gyfeirio at y cyhoeddiad, dywedodd Janet:

“Mae hyn yn newyddion gwych i Ynys Môn a Chymru. Bydd y cannoedd o swyddi hirdymor a fydd yn cael eu creu yn hwb enfawr i gymunedau a’r Gymraeg ar draws y Gogledd-orllewin.

“Hoffwn ddiolch i bawb sydd wedi gweithio’n galed i sicrhau’r canlyniad trawsnewidiol hwn, yn enwedig Virginia Crosbie. Ni all neb wadu ei bod wedi gweithio’n ddiflino i ddod â chyfleuster niwclear newydd yn Wylfa.

“Edrychaf ymlaen at weld y cyfleoedd a fydd yn cael eu creu i fyfyrwyr a phrentisiaethau, ac rwy’n gobeithio’n fawr y bydd Prifysgol Bangor a Choleg Menai yn cael eu grymuso i wneud cyfraniad hanfodol at uwchsgilio ein poblogaeth leol ar gyfer y gyrfaoedd anhygoel a fydd yn cael eu creu”.
