The confirmation that there has been no national oversight of some child safeguarding reviews in schools since 2018 is extremely concerning.
Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, commented on the Welsh Government’s admission:
“This is extremely worrying and disappointing, and it has the potential to put children at risk. There needs to be an obligation for safeguarding reports to be published, shared, and monitored. The challenges and issues faced in one area of Wales are likely to be experienced in others, so sharing these reports will also help other authorities learn and improve.
“The Welsh Government should take responsibility for this failure and take urgent steps to strengthen child safeguarding in schools, ensuring improved oversight of these reports. It must also ensure that local authorities and school governing bodies are supported in conducting independent investigations.
“This lack of national oversight cannot be allowed to continue.”
