Cllr Aaron Wynne, Cabinet Member for Education, Conwy County Borough Council, has come under pressure from Janet Finch-Saunders MS/AS to protect Ysgol Betws-y-Coed from potential closure.

The department which Cllr Wynne oversees is working on a report on the future of the rural primary school for the Local Authority to consider.

The use of tax payers resources to prepare the report is happening despite public opposition to the closure of any of the three schools in the Capel Coed-Elan Federation: Capel Garmon, Betws-y-Coed, and Dolwyddelan.

A public meeting has been arranged by the community to take place at Betws-y-Coed Memorial Hall at 19:00 on Monday 27 October 2025.

Commenting after writing to the Cabinet Member for Education, Janet said:

“The Cabinet Member for Education, from Llanrwst, has a chance to stop the significant distress being encountered by his neighbours in Betws-y-Coed.

“I have sent Cllr Wynne a letter explaining that closing the village school is not a serious option. It would be devastating for the community, language, and access to education. Some primary school students could end up having to travel as long as half an hour from some homes in Capel Curig to Ysgol Capel Garmon.

“Whilst Plaid Cymru may wish to make financial savings through rural school closures, I would choose chopping huge financial black holes such as the HGV depot in Mochdre, Porth Eirias, and taxpayer funded subsidies for Venue Cymru”.

ENDS

Mae'r Cynghorydd Aaron Wynne, yr Aelod Cabinet dros Addysg, Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy, wedi dod o dan bwysau gan Janet Finch-Saunders AS i ddiogelu Ysgol Betws-y-Coed rhag y posibilrwydd o gael ei chau.

Mae'r adran y mae'r Cynghorydd Wynne yn ei goruchwylio yn gweithio ar adroddiad ar ddyfodol yr ysgol gynradd wledig i'r Awdurdod Lleol ei ystyried.

Mae adnoddau trethdalwyr yn cael eu defnyddio i baratoi'r adroddiad er gwaethaf gwrthwynebiad y cyhoedd i gau unrhyw un o'r tair ysgol yn Ffederasiwn Capel Coed-Elan: Capel Garmon, Betws-y-Coed a Dolwyddelan.

Mae’r gymuned wedi trefnu cyfarfod cyhoeddus yn Neuadd Goffa Betws-y-Coed ddydd Llun 27 Hydref 2025 am 19:00.

Ar ôl ysgrifennu at yr Aelod Cabinet dros Addysg, dywedodd Janet:

"Mae gan yr Aelod Cabinet dros Addysg, o Lanrwst, gyfle i atal y gofid sylweddol y mae ei gymdogion ym Metws-y-Coed yn ei wynebu ar hyn o bryd.

"Rydw i wedi anfon llythyr at y Cynghorydd Wynne yn esbonio nad yw cau ysgol y pentref yn opsiwn ymarferol. Byddai'n ddinistriol i'r gymuned, i’r Gymraeg ac i fynediad at addysg. Gallai rhai disgyblion ysgol gynradd orfod teithio cymaint â hanner awr o’u cartrefi yng Nghapel Curig i Ysgol Capel Garmon.

"Mae Plaid Cymru’n dymuno gwneud arbedion ariannol drwy gau ysgolion gwledig, ond byddwn i’n dewis torri tyllau duon ariannol enfawr fel y depo HGV ym Mochdre, Porth Eirias a chymorthdaliadau a ariennir gan drethdalwyr ar gyfer Venue Cymru".
