Speaking in the Welsh Parliament on Wednesday, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, highlighted that as a result of the change to the voting system, which includes introducing, a closed PR list system AND the decision to add another 36 politicians at a cost of over £120 million to the average taxpayer, there is very likely to be a knock on effect of a potential low turnout at the forthcoming election.

Janet added:

“Voting participation is vitally important in our democratic society. It is the Welsh public who should have a choice in who they elect to represent them, and it is their voices that should be heard when big decisions are being made.

“Yet, the Welsh Labour Government and Plaid Cymru have continuously prioritised their own ambitions and pet projects over what really matters to the Welsh public. Instead of funding 36 additional Senedd Members as part of the Senedd expansion, that money should have been redirected towards fixing our Welsh NHS, supporting the Welsh economy, and improving education in Wales.

“The Welsh public should also be able to vote for their political representatives based not on a closed list system, but on the individual merits of each candidate. The Welsh Conservatives have opposed the Senedd expansion from the start and will continue to put the priorities of the people of Wales first.”

Wrth siarad yn y Senedd ddydd Mercher, tynnodd Janet Finch-Saunders AS sylw at y ffaith y bydd y newid i'r system bleidleisio, sy'n cynnwys cyflwyno system cynrychiolaeth gyfrannol â rhestrau caeedig A’R penderfyniad i ychwanegu 36 o wleidyddion eraill ar gost o dros £120 miliwn i'r trethdalwr cyffredin, yn debygol iawn o arwain at lai o bobl yn pleidleisio yn yr etholiad nesaf.

Ychwanegodd Janet:

"Mae pleidleisio yn hanfodol bwysig yn ein cymdeithas ddemocrataidd. Pobl Cymru ddylai gael dewis pwy maen nhw'n eu hethol i'w cynrychioli, a’u lleisiau nhw ddylai gael eu clywed pan fydd penderfyniadau mawr yn cael eu gwneud.

"Eto, mae Llywodraeth Lafur Cymru a Plaid Cymru wedi mynd ati dro ar ôl tro i flaenoriaethu eu huchelgeisiau a'u prosiectau eu hunain dros yr hyn sy'n wirioneddol bwysig i'r cyhoedd yng Nghymru. Yn hytrach na chyllido 36 o Aelodau ychwanegol o'r Senedd fel rhan o ehangu'r Senedd, dylai'r arian hwnnw fod wedi cael ei ailgyfeirio tuag at atgyweirio ein GIG yng Nghymru, cefnogi economi Cymru a gwella addysg yng Nghymru.

"Dylai pobl Cymru hefyd allu pleidleisio dros eu cynrychiolwyr gwleidyddol ar sail rhinweddau unigol pob ymgeisydd, yn hytrach nag ar sail system rhestrau caeedig. Mae'r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig wedi gwrthwynebu ehangu'r Senedd o'r dechrau a byddwn yn parhau i roi blaenoriaethau pobl Cymru yn gyntaf."
