Betws-y-Coed

Conwy County Borough Council have come under pressure from Janet Finch-Saunders MS/AS to protect the Capel Coed-Elan Federation Schools: Capel Garmon, Betws-y-Coed, and Dolwyddelan.

The calls come after it was disclosed to Mrs Finch-Saunders via Freedom of Information Request that “No decision has been made – discussions continue with the Federation”.

The Local Authority has also confirmed that the “Cabinet have not provided a direction”.

Commenting on the importance of protecting these rural primary schools, Janet said:

“Primary schools like Capel Garmon, Betws-y-Coed, and Dolwyddelan are the backbone of their communities.

“Whilst the number of pupils may be small, the positive impact the schools have is massive.

“These schools play an essential role in creating cohesive communities, helping the Welsh language to thrive, and in giving every single student present an opportunity to shine that is so much harder to have in much larger educational settings.

“The Independent, Plaid Cymru, and Labour Cabinet Members in Conwy should give a direction urgently that discussions with the Federation should stop because none of the three schools should close”.

Mae Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy wedi dod o dan bwysau gan Janet Finch-Saunders AS i amddiffyn Ysgolion Ffederasiwn Capel Coed-Elan: Capel Garmon, Betws-y-coed a Dolwyddelan.

Daw'r galwadau ar ôl i Mrs Finch-Saunders gael gwybod, drwy Gais Rhyddid Gwybodaeth, nad oes penderfyniad wedi'i wneud a bod trafodaethau'n parhau gyda'r Ffederasiwn.

Mae'r Awdurdod Lleol hefyd wedi cadarnhau nad yw'r Cabinet wedi rhoi cyfarwyddyd.

Wrth sôn am bwysigrwydd amddiffyn yr ysgolion cynradd gwledig hyn, dywedodd Janet:

"Ysgolion cynradd fel Capel Garmon, Betws-y-coed a Dolwyddelan yw asgwrn cefn eu cymunedau.

"Er bod nifer y disgyblion yn isel, mae'r effaith gadarnhaol mae'r ysgolion yn ei chael yn enfawr.

"Mae'r ysgolion hyn yn gwneud cyfraniad hanfodol at greu cymunedau cydlynus, helpu'r Gymraeg i ffynnu a rhoi cyfle i bob myfyriwr ddisgleirio – rhywbeth sy'n anoddach o lawer mewn lleoliadau addysgol llawer mwy.

"Dylai'r Aelodau Cabinet Annibynnol, Plaid Cymru a Llafur yng Nghonwy roi cyfarwyddyd ar unwaith y dylai trafodaethau gyda'r Ffederasiwn ddod i ben gan na ddylai unrhyw un o'r tair ysgol gau".
