Today, the Senedd’s Climate Change, Environment, and Infrastructure Committee published its report on the response to recent storms. The report found that the current emergency support, insurance coverage, and infrastructure are not fit for purpose.
This is deeply concerning, as severe storms like Storm Darragh and Storm Bert are becoming more frequent, and urgent preventative action from the Welsh Government and local authorities is needed before we head into the winter months.
Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy and the Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Environment, has also called for an emergency vulnerable persons response list to be shared with all emergency services, local authorities, and elected officials.
Commenting on the findings of the report, Janet said:
“The findings of the Climate Change Committee report only reiterate and expand on the concerns that I have raised in the Senedd Siambr. It is clear that the current responses to severe storms have greatly fallen short. This has led to communities being unable to fully cover the costs of storm damage and feeling concerned as we head towards the winter months.
“Urgent action needs to be taken by the Welsh Government and local authorities to ensure that emergency support, insurance coverage, and infrastructure are quickly brought up to a high standard.
“I also reiterate my call for a shared emergency contact list to be kept up to date and shared with emergency services, local authorities, and elected officials. We all have a duty to ensure that the most vulnerable in our communities are protected and have access to vital resources during emergency events such as flooding, caused by these increasingly severe storms.”

Heddiw, cyhoeddodd Pwyllgor Newid Hinsawdd, yr Amgylchedd a Seilwaith y Senedd ei adroddiad ar yr ymateb i stormydd diweddar. Canfu’r adroddiad nad yw'r cymorth mewn argyfwng, yswiriant na seilwaith yn addas i'r diben ar hyn o bryd.
Mae hyn yn bryderus dros ben, gan fod stormydd difrifol fel Storm Darragh a Storm Bert yn digwydd yn amlach, ac mae angen camau ataliol brys gan Lywodraeth Cymru ac awdurdodau lleol cyn misoedd y gaeaf.
Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy a Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig dros Newid Hinsawdd a'r Amgylchedd, hefyd wedi galw am i restr ymateb i bobl sy'n agored i niwed mewn argyfwng gael ei rhannu gyda'r holl wasanaethau brys, awdurdodau lleol a swyddogion etholedig.
Wrth sôn am gasgliadau'r adroddiad, dywedodd Janet:
“Mae canfyddiadau adroddiad y Pwyllgor Newid Hinsawdd yn ategu ac yn ehangu ar y pryderon rydw i wedi'u codi yn Siambr y Senedd. Mae'n amlwg bod yr ymatebion i stormydd difrifol diweddar wedi bod yn ddiffygiol. O ganlyniad, nid yw cymunedau’n gallu talu costau difrod stormydd yn llawn ac maen nhw’n poeni'n fawr wrth i ni nesáu at fisoedd y gaeaf.
“Mae angen i Lywodraeth Cymru ac awdurdodau lleol gymryd camau brys i sicrhau bod cymorth mewn argyfwng, yswiriant a seilwaith yn cael eu codi i safon uchel ar unwaith.
“Rydw i hefyd yn ailadrodd fy ngalwad am i restr cysylltiadau mewn argyfwng gael ei diweddaru a'i rhannu gyda'r gwasanaethau brys, awdurdodau lleol a swyddogion etholedig. Mae dyletswydd ar bob un ohonom i sicrhau bod y rhai mwyaf agored i niwed yn ein cymunedau yn cael eu hamddiffyn ac yn gallu cael mynediad at adnoddau hanfodol yn ystod argyfyngau fel llifogydd, sy'n cael eu hachosi gan y stormydd mwyfwy difrifol hyn.”
