Between April 2024 and March 2025, 3,798 new dwellings were started in Wales,  a decrease of 26% from the previous year. Of the 4,631 dwellings completed, 73% were completed by private developers, down 3% on the previous year.

Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has expressed disappointment at these figures and highlights that the lack of housing under construction is contributing to the housing shortage in Wales and the wider United Kingdom.

Commenting on the latest housing figures, Janet said:

“Last year, I raised the issue of local hotels changing their business models to allow their properties to be used for temporary or emergency accommodation. This situation is a direct result of the severe housing crisis in Aberconwy and the urgent need for affordable homes.

“These latest figures highlight the Welsh Labour Government’s failure to address these issues. Instead, they have allowed this low level of housebuilding to worsen the housing crisis that Wales is still facing.

“The Welsh Government needs to address this issue immediately. If urgent action is not taken, the crisis will only continue because the reality is that we need 12,000 new homes delivered across Wales every year, not 3,798!”

Rhwng Ebrill 2024 a Mawrth 2025, dechreuwyd adeiladu 3,798 o anheddau newydd yng Nghymru, gostyngiad o 26% o'i gymharu â'r flwyddyn flaenorol. O'r 4,631 o anheddau a gwblhawyd, cwblhawyd 73% gan ddatblygwyr preifat, i lawr 3% ar y flwyddyn flaenorol.

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi mynegi siom am y ffigurau hyn ac yn tynnu sylw at y diffyg tai sy'n cael eu hadeiladu yn cyfrannu at y prinder tai yng Nghymru a'r Deyrnas Unedig ehangach.

Wrth sôn am y ffigurau tai diweddaraf, dywedodd Janet:

"Y llynedd, codais y mater o westai lleol yn newid eu modelau busnes i ganiatáu i'w heiddo gael eu defnyddio ar gyfer llety dros dro neu frys. Mae'r sefyllfa hon yn ganlyniad uniongyrchol i'r argyfwng tai difrifol yn Aberconwy a'r angen brys am gartrefi fforddiadwy.

"Mae'r ffigyrau diweddaraf hyn yn tynnu sylw at fethiant Llywodraeth Lafur Cymru i fynd i'r afael â'r materion hyn. Yn hytrach, maen nhw wedi caniatáu i'r lefel isel hon o adeiladu tai waethygu'r argyfwng tai y mae Cymru yn dal i wynebu.

"Mae angen i Lywodraeth Cymru fynd i'r afael â'r mater hwn ar unwaith. Os na chymerir camau brys, bydd yr argyfwng yn parhau oherwydd y gwir amdani yw bod angen 12,000 o gartrefi newydd ar draws Cymru bob blwyddyn, nid 3,798!"
