Alarm at Lack of Progress a Week on from Hospice Closure Announcement / Pryder ynghylch Diffyg Datrysiad Wythnos ar ôl Cyhoeddiad Cau'r Hosbis

Letter

A week has now passed since Gareth Jones, Chief Executive, announced that St David’s Hospice will be temporary closing their four in-patient beds at Penrhos Stanley, Holyhead, from October 2025.

After raising the matter in the Welsh Parliament last week, and undertaking two meetings with the Chief Executive, Janet Finch-Saunders MS has now written to Jeremy Miles MS, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Welsh Government, so to request again:

  • Emergency funding to keep the hospice open for the remainder of this financial year;
  • A review of how hospices across Wales are funded, with the aim of delivering a revised model by the commencement of the next financial year.

Commenting after writing to the Cabinet Secretary, Janet said:

“About 90% of people who die are estimated to need palliative care. From 2017 to 2021, 88.1% of people who died in Wales would have benefitted from such care, and if need stayed constant at 90%, between 2023 and 2048 the number of people with palliative care needs is estimated to increase by 25%.

“Clearly, increased demand and the importance of palliative care is unquestionable. Already, it is extraordinary that a population of over 300,000 people in Conwy, Gwynedd, and Ynys Môn are only served by 16 hospice beds: 12 in Llandudno and 4 in Holyhead. With our area’s older population, and estimated increasing demands for palliative care, a 25% reduction in provision in North West Wales is absurd.

“When considering the facts, it is genuinely shocking that the Welsh Government, a week on from the announced closure, has failed to come forward with at least a short term rescue package.

“This is an emergency, and should be treated as such by the Cabinet Secretary.”

ENDS

Mae wythnos bellach wedi mynd heibio ers i Gareth Jones, Prif Weithredwr, gyhoeddi y bydd Hosbis Dewi Sant yn cau ei bedwar gwely claf mewnol ym Mhenrhos Stanley, Caergybi, dros dro o fis Hydref 2025.

Ar ôl codi'r mater yn y Senedd yr wythnos diwethaf, a chynnal dau gyfarfod gyda'r Prif Weithredwr, mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS bellach wedi ysgrifennu at Jeremy Miles AS, Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Iechyd a Gofal Cymdeithasol, Llywodraeth Cymru, i ofyn eto am y canlynol:

  • Cyllid brys i gadw'r hosbis ar agor am weddill y flwyddyn ariannol hon;
  • Adolygiad o sut mae hosbisau ledled Cymru yn cael eu hariannu, gyda'r nod o gyflwyno model diwygiedig erbyn dechrau'r flwyddyn ariannol nesaf.

Wrth wneud sylwadau ar ôl ysgrifennu at Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet, dywedodd Janet:

"Amcangyfrifir bod angen gofal lliniarol ar tua 90% o bobl sy'n marw. Rhwng 2017 a 2021, byddai 88.1% o'r bobl a fu farw yng Nghymru wedi elwa ar ofal o'r fath ac, os bydd yr angen yn aros yn gyson ar 90%, amcangyfrifir y bydd nifer y bobl ag anghenion gofal lliniarol yn cynyddu 25% rhwng 2023 a 2048.

"Yn amlwg, does dim dwywaith am y galw cynyddol a phwysigrwydd gofal lliniarol. Yn barod, mae'n rhyfeddol mai dim ond 16 o welyau hosbis sydd ar gyfer poblogaeth o dros 300,000 o bobl yng Nghonwy, Gwynedd ac Ynys Môn: 12 yn Llandudno a 4 yng Nghaergybi. Gyda phoblogaeth hŷn ein hardal, a’r amcangyfrif o alw cynyddol am ofal lliniarol, mae gostyngiad o 25% yn y ddarpariaeth yn y Gogledd-orllewin yn hurt.

"Wrth ystyried y ffeithiau, mae'n gwbl syfrdanol bod Llywodraeth Cymru, wythnos ar ôl cyhoeddi’r bwriad i gau’r hosbis, wedi methu â chyflwyno pecyn achub tymor byr o leiaf.

"Mae hwn yn argyfwng, a dylai Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet ei drin felly."
