ABERCONWY AM highlights benefits of major sporting events in Wales

During today’s Welsh Conservatives debate on major sporting events in Wales the Assembly Member for Aberconwy, Janet Finch-Saunders, spoke of the huge boost to tourism that can be gained from hosting large sporting events.

The Member noted the £42million made in Wales from golfing tourism in 2010, thanks to the Ryder Cup, but said that barriers to hosting more high profile sporting occasions remain.

The AM said:

“I am frequently told of constituents problems when travelling by train to Cardiff to watch major fixtures.  The Welsh Government must fine tune its forward planning, work with Arriva Trains Wales, to ensure demand is envisaged and planned for strategically.”

Speaking of the Rugby Work Cup, matches for which will be played in Wales, and the nation’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games the AM added:

“The following months and years will provide the Welsh Government ample opportunity to prove its capability for maximising the benefits from hosting major sporting events.”
