Yesterday, the Welsh Labour Government, Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrat in the Welsh Parliament, all voted in favour of the general principles of the Visitor Accommodation (Register and Levy) (Wales) Bill.

In a fiery debate held in the Welsh Parliament chamber, Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy highlighted how shameful it is that this Bill has been brought forward at a time where Welsh tourism businesses have still not fully recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Commenting on the tourism tax, Janet said:

“My Welsh Conservative colleagues and I are the only party in the Senedd to vote against this “toxic tourism tax”. As a group we are absolutely and totally in support of our tourism, hospitality and retail businesses and against this Bill coming forwards.

“I am really proud to represent a constituency that has fantastic tourism. In some areas it is practically the only industry we have.

“This Bill is going to have a detrimental impact on Welsh tourism businesses, such as self-catering accommodation, that in North Wales have already seen a decrease in the number of days that people are staying.

“The Welsh Conservatives will support businesses across Wales. Placing a legal duty on business owners to pay tax based on the number of guests is not the right, sensible, or fair way forward for tourism in Wales”.

Ddoe, pleidleisiodd Llywodraeth Llafur Cymru, Plaid Cymru a'r Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol yn y Senedd i gyd o blaid egwyddorion cyffredinol y Bil Llety Ymwelwyr (Cofrestru ac Ardoll) (Cymru).

Mewn dadl danllyd a gynhaliwyd yn siambr y Senedd, fe wnaeth Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, dynnu sylw at ba mor gywilyddus yw hi bod y Bil hwn wedi'i gyflwyno ar adeg lle nad yw busnesau twristiaeth Cymru wedi adfer yn llawn o bandemig Covid-19 o hyd.

Wrth sôn am y dreth dwristiaeth, dywedodd Janet:

"Fy nghydweithwyr yn y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig a minnau yw'r unig blaid yn y Senedd i bleidleisio yn erbyn y "dreth dwristiaeth wenwynig" hon. Fel grŵp, rydyn ni’n gwbl ac yn llwyr gefnogol i'n busnesau twristiaeth, lletygarwch a manwerthu ac yn erbyn y Bil hwn.

"Rwy'n falch iawn o gynrychioli etholaeth sydd â thwristiaeth wych. Mewn rhai ardaloedd dyma'r unig ddiwydiant sydd gennym ni i bob pwrpas.

"Mae'r Bil hwn yn mynd i gael effaith niweidiol ar fusnesau twristiaeth yng Nghymru, megis llety hunanarlwyo, sydd eisoes wedi gweld gostyngiad yn nifer y diwrnodau y mae pobl yn aros.

"Bydd y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig yn cefnogi busnesau ledled Cymru. Dydy gosod dyletswydd gyfreithiol ar berchnogion busnes i dalu treth yn seiliedig ar nifer y gwesteion ddim yn ffordd gywir, synhwyrol na theg ymlaen i dwristiaeth yng Nghymru".
