Following over seven years of the ban on razor clam gathering at Llanfairfechan, Conwy, instigated by Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, after several complaints by residents, has repeatedly called for a survey to establish the benefits of the clam beds closure.
With the Welsh Government just reiterating their decision to “extend the closure of the recreational razor clam fishery at Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr for a further 12 months, until midnight 31 December 2025”, Janet said:
“Given that the Welsh Government has announced a nature recovery crisis, it is important that these beds remain protected, but a survey of the health of razor clam beds is required.
Despite years of campaigning on this matter and calling on the Welsh Government to complete this examination, they have still not delivered this.
It is clear that the Welsh Government are not taking this situation seriously enough.
I sincerely hope that the Deputy First Minister will provide the resources, to carry out a necessary recording procedure. We need to undertake this survey to understand the health of our beds, so we can move forward and capitalise on the potential of this area ”.

Wedi saith mlynedd a mwy o waharddiad ar gasglu cyllyll môr yn Llanfairfechan, Conwy, a gychwynnwyd gan Janet Finch-Saunders AS Aberconwy, ar ôl sawl cwyn gan drigolion, mae'r Aelod wedi galw droeon am arolwg i sefydlu manteision cau'r gwelyau cyllyll môr.
Gyda Llywodraeth Cymru newydd ailadrodd ei phenderfyniad i ymestyn cau pysgodfa hamdden cyllyll môr yn Llanfairfechan a Phenmaenmawr am 12 mis arall, tan hanner nos 31 Rhagfyr 2025, dywedodd Janet:
“O gofio bod Llywodraeth Cymru wedi cyhoeddi argyfwng adfer natur, mae'n bwysig bod y gwelyau hyn yn parhau i gael eu gwarchod, ond mae angen arolwg o iechyd gwelyau cyllyll môr.
Er gwaethaf blynyddoedd o ymgyrchu ar y mater hwn a galw ar Lywodraeth Cymru i gwblhau'r archwiliad hwn, nid yw wedi gwneud hyn o hyd.
Mae'n amlwg nad yw Llywodraeth Cymru yn cymryd y sefyllfa hon o ddifri.
Rwy'n mawr obeithio y bydd y Dirprwy Brif Weinidog yn darparu'r adnoddau, i gynnal trefn gofnodi angenrheidiol. Mae angen i ni gynnal yr arolwg hwn i ddeall iechyd ein gwlâu, fel y gallwn symud ymlaen a manteisio ar botensial yr ardal hon”.
