North Wales Left Behind as South Wales Metro Soars Past £1.5B

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy has yesterday highlighted that while the South Wales Metro project soars past £1.5 billion, North Wales is once again left fighting for scraps when it comes to rail investment.

The South Wales Metro budget has surged from £734 million to over £1 billion, with an additional £800 million being invested in new trains to support the network.

Commenting Janet said:

“The contrast could not be clearer—South Wales enjoys major, high-budget projects, while North Wales is forced to settle for minor station upgrades.

“This deep-rooted imbalance is not just unfair—it is holding back North Wales’s economic potential. Businesses, tourism, and local communities all rely on strong transport links, yet the region continues to struggle with outdated infrastructure, infrequent services, and a lack of capacity.

“Just last week, constituents voiced their frustration at the blatant unfairness in rail funding. The lack of major investment means residents and visitors alike face ongoing challenges in accessing services and opportunities—a situation that would never be tolerated in South Wales.

“The Welsh Government must act now. The Cabinet Secretary must acknowledge this regional disparity and commit to a fairer, more balanced approach to rail development. North Wales deserves its fair share—not just token gestures, but real, transformative investment.”
