Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy is delighted to see that commemorations are underway for this years remembrance in Llandudno.
Over the weekend a knitted life-sized tank rolled into Llandudno after being created to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. About 50 volunteers created the tank, measuring 24ft in length, 9ft in width and 7ft (2.1m) in height.
The tank is on show at Victoria shopping centre from Saturday until 2 November. The D-Day landings saw more than150,000 Allied troops descend on the beaches of Normandy during World War Two in June 1944.
Commenting on the news Janet said:
“I am delighted to see this community project come to life in Llandudno. Knitters from all over the commonwealth created panels for the tank.
“My heartfelt thanks go out to the Rippon Community Poppy Project whose hard work has clearly paid off.
“We find ourselves at a significant moment, 80 years after the landings, with only a few remaining veterans who were part of that historic event. It’s crucial to recognise that we are transitioning from a time when these events are still living memories to a point where they will solely reside in the annals of history.
“It is our responsibility to preserve and share the spirit of all those who participated in this bold operation—not only the soldiers who fought, but also those who carefully planned it. We must ensure future generations understand the magnitude of their sacrifice and reaffirm our commitment to peace and freedom.”
