Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, has formally objected to the Maen Hir Solar Farm on Anglesey.

The project, which aims to deliver renewable energy as part of the Anglesey County Council’s Energy Island Programme, poses a significant risk to the local environment. The scale of the scheme is vast and plans to occupy 1,284 hectares across three parcels – nearly 2% of all of Anglesey.

There are real fears amongst the community that this will have a detrimental impact on the local community, to the point that some would consider it an industrialisation of rural communities. This would have the additionally consequence of taking land away from farmers that is vital to Wales’s food production.

Commenting on the project Janet said:

“Having studied the scheme in detail I have come to the conclusion that this project would have a detrimental effect on not only the environment and local communities but also on Wales’s ability to have a self-sufficient food supply.

“The Future Wales: The National Plan 2040 states that ‘all proposals should demonstrate that they will not have an unacceptable adverse impact on the environment’. The evidence is clear that that there will be a detrimental impact on agriculture, one of the backbones of the local, regional, and national economy.

“We need to ensure that Wales retains enough usable land for food production. We already rely too heavily on food imports with big carbon footprints. Combine this with the fact that the Welsh Government want to commandeer 20% of Welsh farmers’ land, we must consider how we can achieve a self-sufficient food chain.

“Sadly, I am therefore unable to support the project. I have written to Lightsource BP the ones behind the project to voice my concerns, including the discovery that the community solar project, which will raise money for spend in the local community, is set to be place in one of the areas of the site most vulnerable to flooding.”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS, Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid dros Newid Hinsawdd i’r Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, wedi gwrthwynebu'n ffurfiol Fferm Solar Maen Hir ar Ynys Môn.

Mae'r prosiect, sydd â’r nod o ddarparu ynni adnewyddadwy fel rhan o Raglen Ynys Ynni Cyngor Ynys Môn, yn achosi risg sylweddol i'r amgylchedd lleol. Mae maint y cynllun yn sylweddol a’r bwriad yw y bydd yn meddiannu 1,284 hectar ar draws tri pharsel - bron i 2% o Ynys Môn i gyd.

Mae yna ofnau gwirioneddol ymysg y gymuned y bydd hyn yn cael effaith niweidiol ar y gymuned leol, i'r pwynt y byddai rhai yn ei ystyried yn ddull o ddiwydiannu cymunedau gwledig. Byddai hyn hefyd yn arwain at gymryd tir oddi ar ffermwyr sy'n hanfodol i gynhyrchu bwyd yng Nghymru.

Wrth sôn am y prosiect, dywedodd Janet:

"Ar ôl astudio'r cynllun yn fanwl, rwyf wedi dod i'r casgliad y byddai'r prosiect hwn yn cael effaith andwyol nid yn unig ar yr amgylchedd a chymunedau lleol ond hefyd ar allu Cymru i gael cyflenwad bwyd hunangynhaliol.

"Mae Cymru'r Dyfodol: Y Cynllun Cenedlaethol 2040 yn datgan y 'dylai pob cynnig ddangos na chânt effaith andwyol annerbyniol ar yr amgylchedd'. Mae'r dystiolaeth yn glir y bydd effaith niweidiol ar amaethyddiaeth, un o gonglfeini’r economi leol, yr economi ranbarthol a’r economi yn genedlaethol.

"Mae angen i ni sicrhau bod Cymru'n cadw digon o dir y gellir ei ddefnyddio ar gyfer cynhyrchu bwyd. Rydyn ni eisoes yn dibynnu'n ormodol ar fewnforion bwyd gydag olion traed carbon mawr. Cyfunwch hyn â'r ffaith bod Llywodraeth Cymru eisiau rheoli 20% o dir ffermwyr Cymru, ac mae’n rhaid i ni ystyried sut y gallwn gyflawni cadwyn fwyd hunangynhaliol.

"Yn anffodus, ni allaf gefnogi'r prosiect hwn. Rwyf wedi ysgrifennu at Lightsource BP sydd y tu ôl i'r prosiect i leisio fy mhryderon, gan gynnwys y ffaith fy mod i wedi dysgu mai’r bwriad yw gosod y prosiect solar cymunedol, a fydd yn codi arian i'w wario yn y gymuned leol, yn un o ardaloedd y safle sydd fwyaf agored i lifogydd."
