Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has written to the Welsh Government asking Mark Drakeford MS, Cabinet Secretary for Finance to “rule out an income tax rise in 2025/26”.

The call comes after the former First Minister stated this week that “in the budget process there will undoubtedly be a cabinet debate about whether or not we should change the Welsh rates of income tax".

The Welsh Government has had the ability to raise or lower the three rates of income tax in Wales since 2019.

Commenting on the fact that the Welsh Government is considering increasing income tax, Janet said:

“Welsh Government must rule out tax rises. An income tax increase would be a punitive measure that will hit people in their pockets.

“A tax hike will compound the misery for people the length and breadth of Wales.

“At a time when residents in Aberconwy are paying more council tax, losing Winter Fuel Allowance, and struggling to keep businesses afloat, the last thing they and our economy needs is more taxation. It would be madness!”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, wedi ysgrifennu at Lywodraeth Cymru yn gofyn i Mark Drakeford AS, Ysgrifennydd y Cabinet dros Gyllid "i benderfynu yn erbyn codiad treth incwm yn 2025/26".

Daw'r alwad wedi i'r cyn-Brif Weinidog ddatgan yr wythnos hon “y bydd yna yn ystod y broses gyllideb, heb os, ddadl yn y cabinet ynghylch a ddylen ni newid cyfraddau treth incwm Cymru ai peidio".

Mae gan Lywodraeth Cymru y gallu i godi neu ostwng y tair cyfradd treth incwm yng Nghymru ers 2019.

Wrth gyfeirio at y ffaith fod Llywodraeth Cymru yn ystyried codi’r dreth incwm, dywedodd Janet:

"Mae'n rhaid i Lywodraeth Cymru ddiystyru codiadau mewn trethi. Byddai cynnydd yn y dreth incwm yn fesur cosbol a fydd yn taro pobl yn eu pocedi.

"Bydd codiad yn y dreth yn dwysau'r trallod i bobl ar hyd a lled Cymru.

"Ar adeg pan fo trigolion Aberconwy yn talu mwy o dreth gyngor, yn colli’r Lwfans Tanwydd Gaeaf, ac yn ei chael hi'n anodd cadw busnesau i fynd, y peth olaf y maen nhw a'n heconomi ei angen yw mwy o drethi. Byddai'n gwbl hurt!"
