According to official statistics from the Department of Work and Pensions, the total number of Winter Fuel Payments to households in the constituency of Aberconwy for winter 2022 to 2023 was 10,508.
According to Stat-Xplore, UK Government, 1,603 residents in Aberconwy were registered on the “pension credit caseload” in February 2024.
Bearing in mind that the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, announced that the UK Government would change the rules to withdraw the Winter Fuel Payment from pensioner households not in receipt of Pension Credit or certain other means-tested benefits, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy has raised concerns that as many as 8,905 households in her constituency could lose support.
The figure has been derived from deducting the number of pension credit recipients, 1,603, from the number of Winter Fuel Payment recipients, 10,508.
Commenting on the Winter Fuel Payment, Janet said:
“As the Welsh Parliament Member for Aberconwy I have been approached by a number of older residents who are seriously concerned that they will be unable to afford to heat their homes this winter.
“With no official statistics published by constituencies so to give a clear indication as to the impact of the change, I have used existing UK Government data to calculate that as many as 8,905 households could lose out on support in the constituency I am honoured to represent in the Welsh Parliament.
“I have now written to the Welsh Government asking what steps they will take to support residents struggling with the cost of energy this Winter. Should you be struggling or need assistance, please do contact me”.

Yn ôl ystadegau swyddogol gan yr Adran Gwaith a Phensiynau, 10,508 oedd cyfanswm y Taliadau Tanwydd Gaeaf i aelwydydd yn etholaeth Aberconwy ar gyfer gaeaf 2022 i 2023.
Yn ôl Stat-Xplore, Llywodraeth y DU, cofrestrwyd 1,603 o drigolion Aberconwy ar y "llwyth achos credyd pensiwn" ym mis Chwefror 2024.
O gofio bod Canghellor y Trysorlys, Rachel Reeves, wedi cyhoeddi y byddai Llywodraeth y DU yn newid y rheolau i dynnu Taliad Tanwydd y Gaeaf yn ôl o aelwydydd pensiynwyr nad ydyn nhw’n derbyn Credyd Pensiwn neu rai budd-daliadau prawf modd eraill, mae’r Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy wedi mynegi pryderon y gallai cymaint â 8,905 o aelwydydd yn ei hetholaeth golli cefnogaeth.
Cafwyd y ffigwr hwn drwy dynnu nifer y derbynwyr credyd pensiwn, 1,603, o nifer y rhai sy'n derbyn Taliad Tanwydd y Gaeaf, 10,508.
Wrth sôn am Daliad Tanwydd y Gaeaf, dywedodd Janet:
"Fel Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy mae nifer o drigolion hŷn wedi cysylltu â mi yn poeni'n ddifrifol na fyddant yn gallu fforddio gwresogi eu cartrefi y gaeaf hwn.
"Heb unrhyw ystadegau swyddogol wedi'u cyhoeddi gan etholaethau er mwyn rhoi arwydd clir o effaith y newid, rwyf wedi defnyddio data presennol Llywodraeth y DU i gyfrifo y gallai cymaint ag 8,905 o aelwydydd golli cefnogaeth yn yr etholaeth y mae'n anrhydedd i mi ei chynrychioli yn y Senedd.
"Rwyf bellach wedi ysgrifennu at Lywodraeth Cymru yn gofyn pa gamau y bydd yn eu cymryd i gefnogi preswylwyr sy'n cael trafferth gyda chost ynni'r gaeaf hwn. Os ydych chi'n cael trafferth neu angen cymorth, cysylltwch â mi".
