Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy is deeply concerned by the state of housing in Aberconwy.
Over the past decade, Aberconwy has faced a severe housing crisis, forcing many people into hotels and temporary accommodations, resulting in significant expenses for taxpayers. Only recently another hotel has been commandeered to house those in need of housing.
The spend on hotels/guest houses/and bed and breakfasts used by Conwy County Borough Council as temporary accommodation in 2021/22 was £3,193,636
The predicted spend on hotels/guest houses/and bed and breakfasts used by the Local Authority as temporary accommodation in 2022/23 is in the region of £4 million.
A major issue is the distinct lack of rented social housing in North Wales, compounded by insufficient Local Authority and Health Board land being allocated in Wales’s Local Development Plan.
Commenting on the news Janet said:
“Over the past three years we have seen several hotels locally change their business model to allow their properties to be used for temporary or emergency accommodation.
"This situation is a direct result of the severe housing crisis in Aberconwy and the urgent need for available rented social housing and affordable homes.
“While some development is ongoing, these properties are priced around £395k-£600k which are not the sort of properties that are desperately needed. The Welsh Government has repeatedly failed to meet its own house-building targets over the years, leading to the lowest numbers ever built over the last 18 months.
“Families often find themselves stuck in hotel rooms for several months, with no prospects of moving into their own homes. This situation is unacceptable, as these hotels are designed for short-term tourist stays and are not suitable for indefinite long-term accommodation.
“The Welsh Government need to address this immediately and put in place a permanent solution that will see the expansion of the rented social sector and the end of hotels and private property being commandeered to address this crisis.”

Mae’r gwariant a ragwelir ar westai/tai llety/a gwely a brecwast a ddefnyddir gan yr Awdurdod Lleol fel llety dros dro yn 2022/23 oddeutu £4 miliwn.
Un broblem fawr yw'r diffyg penodol o dai cymdeithasol i’w rhentu yn y Gogledd, ac mae hyn yn cael ei waethygu gan nad oes digon o dir Awdurdod Lleol a Bwrdd Iechyd yn cael ei ddyrannu yng Nghynllun Datblygu Lleol Cymru.
Wrth sôn am y newyddion dywedodd Janet:
“Dros y tair blynedd diwethaf rydyn ni wedi gweld nifer o westai yn newid eu model busnes yn lleol i ganiatáu i'w heiddo gael ei ddefnyddio fel llety dros dro neu lety argyfwng.
“Mae'r sefyllfa hon yn ganlyniad uniongyrchol i'r argyfwng tai difrifol yn Aberconwy a'r angen brys am gyflenwad o dai cymdeithasol i’w rhentu a thai fforddiadwy.
“Er bod rhywfaint o ddatblygiad wedi’i wneud, mae'r tai hyn yn costio tua £395,000-£600,000 ac nid dyna’r math o eiddo y mae dirfawr angen amdano. Mae Llywodraeth Cymru wedi methu â chyrraedd ei thargedau adeiladu tai ei hun dro ar ôl tro dros y blynyddoedd, gan arwain at adeiladu’r niferoedd isaf erioed dros y deunaw mis diwethaf.
“Yn aml mae teuluoedd yn wynebu bod mewn ystafelloedd gwestai am fisoedd lawer, heb unrhyw ragolygon o symud i'w cartrefi eu hunain. Mae'r sefyllfa hon yn annerbyniol, gan fod y gwestai hyn wedi'u bwriadu ar gyfer arosiadau twristaidd tymor byr ac nid ydyn nhw’n addas ar gyfer llety hirdymor.
“Mae angen i Lywodraeth Cymru fynd i'r afael â hyn ar unwaith a dod o hyd i ateb parhaol a fydd yn arwain at ehangu'r sector rhentu cymdeithasol ac atal gwestai ac eiddo preifat rhag cael eu defnyddio i fynd i’r afael â’r argyfwng hwn.”
