Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy was delighted to visit the drop-in Heritage Room in Cwm Penmachno.

Cwm Penmachno used to be a bustling quarry village, featuring numerous shops, businesses, and frequent community events. It also had its own school, chapels, and a church. However, when quarrying ceased in 1962, the population declined significantly, leaving the remaining residents with limited facilities. Despite this, the community's spirit remained resilient, leading to the formation of the Cwm Community Action Group, which aimed to preserve and enhance community life.

Residents worked with consultants Headland Design of Chester and local artist Yvonne Amor to create an interpretative centre and timeline depicting the history and culture of Cwm Penmachno.

Commenting on the news, Janet said:

“It was a delight to visit the Heritage Room during one of my surgeries in Cwm Penmachno.

“A hidden gem in a once bustling industrial village that has seen its transformation into a place of significant historical interest.

“I am grateful for all those who were involved in the project, especially the Cwm Community Action Group whose hard work has made all this possible.

“It is so important for our local neighbourhoods to have such a strong community spirt. The rich history of this charming Welsh village will now be preserved for future generations, shedding light on a chapter of history that might have otherwise been forgotten.”
