Razor Clam

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, is concerned that for another year yet another assessment of the razor clam beds at Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr will not be completed.

After Janet's statement in the chamber on January 9th, highlighting the incomplete assessment of razor clam beds in 2022, the Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd, reiterated that “recreational razor clam fisheries at Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr have now been closed for a further 12 months, until midnight 31 December 2024.”

Recognising the importance of safeguarding and sustaining razor clam populations, there remains a call for further efforts to utilise this marine area and to avoid the illegal harvesting of the clams.

Commenting on the news Janet said:

“I am extremely grateful to the Minister for her response on this matter and working with me to address this. However, we are entering yet another year where a survey into the razor clam beds will not be completed.

“I have been campaigning for a number of years on this matter and still the Welsh Government are delaying and delaying this much needed assessment. Meanwhile, several residents are reporting to me that at low tide people are going to the foreshore with buckets and illegally harvesting the clams.

“This unique marine area would be perfect for a PHD project for those studying at Bangor University, one of the largest university centres teaching marine sciences in the UK.

“I sincerely hope the Minister reconsiders this decision, avoiding unnecessary dither and delay. Let's expedite the survey process to move forward and capitalise on the potential of this area. As it stands it seems that the Nature Crisis in our sea is not being taken seriously.”

Mae Janet Finch-Saunders, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Aberconwy, yn pryderu na fydd asesiad o’r gwelyau cyllyll môr yn Llanfairfechan a Phenmaenmawr yn cael ei gwblhau am flwyddyn arall.

Ar ôl datganiad Janet yn y siambr ar 9 Ionawr, yn tynnu sylw at asesiad anghyflawn gwelyau cyllyll môr 2022, nododd y Gweinidog Materion Gwledig a Gogledd Cymru, a’r Trefnydd, fod pysgodfeydd cyllyll môr hamdden yn Llanfairfechan a Phenmaenmawr bellach wedi eu cau am 12 mis arall, tan hanner nos ar 31 Rhagfyr 2024.

Gan gydnabod pwysigrwydd diogelu a chynnal poblogaethau cyllyll môr, mae galw o hyd am ymdrechion pellach i ddefnyddio’r ardal forol hon ac i osgoi cynaeafu’r cyllyll môr yn anghyfreithlon.

Wrth gynnig sylwadau ar y newyddion, dywedodd Janet:

“Rwy’n hynod ddiolchgar i’r Gweinidog am ei hymateb ar y mater hwn ac am weithio gyda mi i fynd i’r afael â hyn. Fodd bynnag, rydyn ni ar fin dechrau blwyddyn arall heb gwblhau arolwg o’r gwelyau cyllyll môr.

“Rydw i wedi bod yn ymgyrchu ynghylch y mater hwn ers sawl blwyddyn, ac mae Llywodraeth Cymru yn dal i oedi a gohirio’r asesiad hwn, asesiad y mae angen dirfawr amdano. Yn y cyfamser, mae nifer o drigolion yn sôn fod pobl yn mynd i’r blaendraeth gyda bwcedi ac yn cynaeafu’r cyllyll môr yn anghyfreithlon pan mae’r llanw ar drai.

“Byddai’r ardal forol unigryw hon yn berffaith ar gyfer prosiect PhD i’r rhai sy’n astudio ym Mhrifysgol Bangor, un o ganolfannau addysgu gwyddorau morol mwyaf unrhyw brifysgol yn y DU.

“Rwy’n mawr obeithio y bydd y Gweinidog yn ailystyried y penderfyniad hwn, gan osgoi petruso ac oedi diangen. Gadewch i ni gyflymu’r broses arolygu er mwyn symud ymlaen a manteisio ar botensial yr ardal hon. Fel mae pethau, mae’n ymddangos nad yw’r Argyfwng Natur yn ein moroedd yn cael ei gymryd o ddifrif.”
