Calls for Business Rates Equality in Wales / Galw am Gydraddoldeb o ran Ardrethi Busnes yng Nghymru

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy made a speech yesterday in the Senedd criticising again the Welsh Government for proposing to cut business rate relief by nearly half.

With the Welsh Government still intending to proceed with the cut of business rate relief from 75% to 35% there is huge concern for our small businesses across Aberconwy. Many fear that at a time when they need support the most this pulling up of the drawbridge will leave them vulnerable and in danger of bankruptcy.

Shocking figures show that last year Wales lost more than a pub a week in 2023 with 63 shutting their doors. This is more than double the 0.9% decline of pub numbers in England during the same period. More broadly, over the past six years Wales has lost 272 pubs and despite this dire situation the outlook is becoming increasingly gloomy.

Commenting on this Janet said:

“At a time when businesses are looking for support the Welsh Government are determined to double down on Welsh hospitality and tourism by cutting their relief.

“Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru are busy brainstorming novel ways to bankrupt our businesses. For example, in 2024-25 the rates multiplier for Wales has been set as 56.2p. This is an increase of 2.7p from the 2023-24 rates. This means that Wales will continue to have the highest business rates in Great Britain.

“This is short sighted, and again, it takes me and my group to remind the Welsh Government that the Welsh Conservatives are on the side of residents.”

Cyflwynodd Janet Finch-Saunders, Aelod o Senedd Cymru dros Aberconwy, araith yn y Senedd ddoe yn beirniadu Llywodraeth Cymru unwaith eto am gynnig torri rhyddhad ardrethi busnes bron yn ei hanner.

Gyda Llywodraeth Cymru yn dal i fwriadu bwrw ymlaen â thorri rhyddhad ardrethi busnes o 75% i 35%, mae hyn yn achosi pryder enfawr i fusnesau bach ledled Aberconwy. Ar adeg pan maen nhw fwyaf angen cymorth, mae llawer yn ofni y bydd cau’r drws yn glep fel hyn yn eu gadael mewn sefyllfa fregus ac mewn perygl o fethdalu.

Mae ffigyrau brawychus yn dangos bod Cymru wedi colli mwy nag un dafarn yr wythnos yn ystod 2023, gyda 63 wedi cau eu drysau. Mae hyn yn fwy na dwbl y gostyngiad o 0.9% yn nifer y tafarndai yn Lloegr yn ystod yr un cyfnod. Yn ehangach, dros y chwe blynedd diwethaf, mae Cymru wedi colli 272 o dafarndai ac er mor enbyd yw’r sefyllfa, mae’n argoeli y bydd pethau’n mynd yn waeth byth.

Wrth gynnig sylwadau, dywedodd Janet:

“Ar adeg pan mae busnesau’n chwilio am gymorth, mae Llywodraeth Cymru yn benderfynol o roi halen ar y briw i letygarwch a thwristiaeth yng Nghymru drwy dorri rhyddhad ardrethi busnes.

“Mae Llafur Cymru a Phlaid Cymru yn brysur chwilio am syniadau newydd i droi’n busnesau yn fethdalwyr. Er enghraifft, yn 2024-25 mae’r lluosydd ardrethi ar gyfer Cymru wedi’i osod ar 56.2c. Mae hyn yn gynnydd o 2.7c ar ardrethi 2023-24. Mae hynny’n golygu mai yng Nghymru fydd yr ardrethi busnes uchaf ym Mhrydain Fawr o hyd.

“Mae hwn yn gam cibddall, ac unwaith eto, mae rheidrwydd arnaf i a’r grŵp Toriaidd i atgoffa Llywodraeth Cymru bod y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig ar ochr preswylwyr.”
