Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has welcomed the news that Llandudno Town Council has included resources to fund community skips for the town in the 2024/25 financial year.
The decision follows a campaign to improve pest control on the Tre Creuddyn estate, Llandudno, and a letter asking the Mayor to consider adding the future provision of skips to the agenda, as part of a series of actions being undertaken by Mrs Finch-Saunders, Cartrefi Conwy, and Cllr Thomas Montgomery.
Speaking after Llandudno Town Council voted to include money for skips in the budget, Janet said:
“I would like to thank Llandudno Town Council for listening to and acting on the concerns of local residents.
“With the Town Council, Cllr Thomas Montgomery, and myself working to help residents concerned about rats, we are seeing democracy in action and delivering at all levels.
“There is an issue with the build-up of household waste around the estate which in turn encourages vermin in to the area, so I hope that the skips can be provided soon.
“As it stands it looks like Conwy County Borough Council could make the situation worse by moving nappy collections from weekly to monthly”.
Cllr Thomas Montgomery, County Councillor for Tudno Ward added:
"I would like to echo Janet's thanks to Llandudno Town Council for supporting our request for resources to be put aside, which can be called upon for community skips.
"While more work is still needed to ensure that Conwy Council and Registered Social Landlords are working with residents to prevent household waste from building up, I do hope that skips will help to clear the estate and other residential areas across our town.
"As Conwy County is well into its budget setting process, I will be working hard with my fellow County Councillors to do all I can to protect frontline waste management services. Currently there are proposals that would lead to a reduction in litter bins across our communities and nappy collections being moved to a monthly pick up, these are both unacceptable and recommendations that I will be opposing".
