Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, spoke out in the Welsh Parliament this week about the Welsh Labour Government’s intention to go ahead with new law that will effectively ban farmers from spreading slurry on their own land for several months of the year.
From 1 August 2024 the spreading of slurry will be prohibited during the following periods:
- On sandy or shallow soil: grassland: 1 September to 31 December; and tillage land: 1 August to 31 December;
- On other soils: grassland: 15 October to 15 January; and tillage land: 1 October to 31 January.
Speaking after challenging Lesley Griffiths MS, Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, Janet said:
“Farmers in Aberconwy have been clear to me that they are in despair at the Labour Minister’s apparent complete lack of understanding as to how agricultural businesses operate.
“Welsh Government and their cooperation partners in Plaid Cymru do not have the ability to predict the weather or the changes we are seeing in seasons, so why are they pursuing arbitrary dates?
“I opposed this law from the outset and would urge Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru to rethink the requirements to have closed periods.”

Wrth siarad ar ôl herio Lesley Griffiths AS, y Gweinidog Materion Gwledig a Gogledd Cymru, dywedodd Janet:
"Mae ffermwyr yn Aberconwy wedi egluro i mi eu bod wedi digalonni gyda diffyg dealltwriaeth amlwg y Gweinidog Llafur ynghylch sut mae busnesau amaethyddol yn gweithredu.
"Does gan Lywodraeth Cymru a'u partneriaid ym Mhlaid Cymru ddim y gallu i ragweld y tywydd na'r newidiadau rydyn ni’n eu gweld mewn tymhorau, felly pam eu bod yn dilyn dyddiadau mympwyol?
"Gwrthwynebais y ddeddf hon o'r cychwyn cyntaf, a byddwn yn annog Llafur Cymru a Phlaid Cymru i ailystyried y gofynion i gael cyfnodau caeedig."
