Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Housing, questioned the Minister Julie James on why the Welsh Government has refused to fund waking watches.

A waking watch is a system where specially trained people continually patrol all floors and the outside of the building. The purpose of this is to detect a fire, raise the alarm, and manage any evacuation.

Commenting on her exchange, Welsh Conservative Shadow minister for Housing and Climate Change, Janet Finch Saunders said:

“The Minister has chosen to provide a long-winded answer, when in reality all she is saying is ‘no’. This is while six years on from the Grenfell tragedy, residents in Wales are still living in dangerous buildings.

“Welsh Government may claim that their approach was to ensure that works take place as quickly as possible, but the reality is that residents in Wales still live in dangerous buildings.

“The Minister has failed. She has failed to take decisive action to safeguard victims; failed to treat housing association and privately owned buildings with the same priority; failed to stand up to developers; and failed to protect victims from spiralling costs, such as the waking watch service.”

Janet Finch-Saunders AS, Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd a Thai yr Wrthblaid, fu'n holi'r Gweinidog Julie James ynghylch pam fod Llywodraeth Cymru wedi gwrthod ariannu cynllun gwylio.

System yw hon lle mae pobl sydd wedi'u hyfforddi'n arbennig yn patrolio bob llawr a'r tu allan i'r adeilad yn barhaus. Pwrpas hyn yw canfod tân, canu'r larwm, a rheoli unrhyw broses wacáu.

Wrth sôn am y drafodaeth, dywedodd Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd a Thai yr Wrthblaid y Ceidwadwyr Cymreig, Janet Finch Saunders:

"Mae'r Gweinidog wedi dewis rhoi ateb hirwyntog, pan mai'r cyfan y mae hi'n ei ddweud mewn gwirionedd yw 'na'. Chwe blynedd ers trychineb Grenfell, mae trigolion Cymru yn dal i fyw mewn adeiladau peryglus.

"Efallai y bydd Llywodraeth Cymru yn honni mai eu polisi oedd sicrhau bod gwaith yn digwydd cyn gynted â phosibl, ond y gwir amdani yw bod trigolion yng Nghymru yn dal i fyw mewn adeiladau peryglus.

"Mae'r Gweinidog wedi methu. Mae hi wedi methu â chymryd camau pendant i ddiogelu dioddefwyr; methu â thrin cymdeithasau tai ac adeiladau preifat gyda'r un flaenoriaeth; methu â herio datblygwyr; ac wedi methu ag amddiffyn dioddefwyr rhag costau cynyddol, fel y gwasanaeth cynllun gwylio."
