Following serious damage caused to Pont Fawr, the pedestrian and vehicle bridge over the Conwy River, in Llanrwst, Janet Finch-Saunders MS has written again to Conwy County Borough Council and the Welsh Government asking them to cooperate on developing a signal controlled solution on the A470 for the crossing.

Speaking after taking action, Janet said:

“The chaos that has been unfolding on the main road over the Conwy in Llanrwst is well known.

“The historic walls have been wacked on numerous occasions, Mexican standoffs are a regular occurrence on the apex, and pedestrians and drivers put their safety at risk when vehicles attempt to reverse, especially into the A470.

“For years I have been asking for consideration to be given to introducing a signal controlled solution on the A470 for Pont Fawr, yet no action has been taken.

“The Welsh Government keeps delaying, even though further trouble is occurring.

“I have today written to both Conwy County Borough Council and the Minister for Climate Change emphasising the need for them to work together to develop a plan that limits the risk of the bridge being damaged again.”

Letter to Conwy County Borough Council

Written Question to the Minister for Climate Change:

Will the Minister cooperate with Conwy County Borough Council so to develop a signal controlled scheme on the A470 for vehicles wanting to cross Pont Fawr, Llanrwst?

Yn dilyn difrod difrifol a achoswyd i Bont Fawr, y bont i gerddwyr a cherbydau dros Afon Conwy yn Llanrwst, mae Janet Finch-Saunders AS wedi ysgrifennu eto at Gyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy a Llywodraeth Cymru yn gofyn iddynt gydweithredu ar ddatblygu datrysiad dan reolaeth goleuadau traffig ar yr A470 ar gyfer y groesfan.

Yn siarad ar ôl gweithredu, dywedodd Janet:

"Mae pawb yn gwybod am yr anhrefn sydd wedi bod yn datblygu ar y brif ffordd dros Afon Conwy yn Llanrwst.

"Mae'r waliau hanesyddol wedi cael eu taro ar sawl achlysur, mae gyrwyr sy’n dod i gwrdd â’i gilydd yn gwrthod ildio yn rheolaidd, ac mae cerddwyr a gyrwyr yn peryglu eu diogelwch pan fydd cerbydau'n ceisio gyrru am yn ôl, yn enwedig i mewn i’r A470.

"Rwyf wedi bod yn gofyn ers blynyddoedd iddynt ystyried cyflwyno datrysiad dan reolaeth goleuadau traffig ar yr A470 ar gyfer Pont Fawr, ond does dim camau wedi'u cymryd.

"Mae Llywodraeth Cymru yn dal i oedi, er bod un llanast yn digwydd ar ôl y llall.

"Heddiw, rwyf wedi ysgrifennu at Gyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Conwy a'r Gweinidog Newid Hinsawdd yn pwysleisio'r angen iddynt gydweithio i ddatblygu cynllun sy'n lleihau’r risg y bydd y bont yn cael ei difrodi eto."
